Global warming increases the risk of an extinction domino effect
Science Daily ^ | November 28, 2018 | by European Commission Joint Research Centre

The complex network of interdependencies between plants and animals multiplies the species at risk of extinction due to environmental change, according to a new study.

Scientist Giovanni Strona, in collaboration with Professor Corey Bradshaw constructed 2000 "Virtual Earths," which they populated with thousands of plants and animals organized into a global system of inter-connected food-webs.

They then subjected the virtual Earths to extreme trajectories of environmental change, consisting in either a "global warming," i.e. a linear, monotonic increase in temperature, or a "nuclear winter," i.e. a progressive cooling, such as that which could follow multiple nuclear detonations or an asteroid impact.

According to the simulations, 5-6°C of warming would be enough to wipe out most life on the virtual Earths the scientists created.

Giovanni recognises that "there are obvious limitations in our ambitious model, due to the multiple challenges of building realistic global ecological systems.

On the one hand, our results are consistent with real-world patterns for which we have empirical evidence.

This make us confident that the many assumptions we had to take in order to build a functional model are sound. On the other hand, however, it would be misleading to just focus on raw numbers."

If they can do all of these fantastic models with accuracy....why can’t they predict the 2019 NFL Super Bowl champs already?

This “science” and scenario does not rise to the level of comic book sophistication. Then again don’t underestimate the propaganda of the Left. They know their audience. Many people who idolize comic book, scientifically challenged, super heroes believe they are real and believe the stories.

They are panicking because real long term climate forecasts are for COOLER climate and they are anxious to sign some paper to be able to take credit.

If they can do all of these fantastic models with accuracy....

If their 'fantastic models' were accurate, they could run them in reverse and tell US what the weather was yesterday, last week, last month, considering we already know these things.

...constructed 2000 "Virtual Earths,"

All of which obey the limited set of relationships, interactions, and dependencies put into them by the people constructing/programming the model.

Further, wow, all of 2000? When you've Monte-Carlo'd a million or more variations get back to us. 2000 is not a serious number. It is particularly non-useful in a model with large numbers of elements with complex relationships and a fine mesh run through thousands of time steps.

...which they populated with thousands of plants and animals organized into a global system of inter-connected food-webs.

Wow, "thousands" - so how many instances of each species of plant are in the model? Did you simulate every stalk of corn in Iowa? Every acre? Or just Iowa? How many of the 390,000 plus species of plant are represented - with all their interactions through soil and light and water? How many instances of insects interacting with your plants? How many of the 950,000 species of insects are included, interacting with each other and the plants? Then tell me how many instances of each of the 8.7 million species of animals on earth are represented? Then what is your mesh size? A kilometer? Kind of hard to represent an ant colony realistically at that scale. A meter? Tell me, what did you run this simulation on? Because if you run the numbers to do this anywhere near realistically (assuming you even knew all the interactions, which we don't, we don't even know all the species yet - we're still discovering) the problem is intractably large. There isn't enough computing power on the planet to attempt it.

Giovanni recognises that "there are obvious limitations in our ambitious model, due to the multiple challenges of building realistic global ecological systems.

No, you didn't build a scientific model. You built a toy, SimEarth.

This make us confident that the many assumptions we had to take...

You're an idiot. Maybe well educated, well spoken, but professionally an idiot.

Yes, but......

It would be interesting to know how much the government grant was and for how many years the grant was available to them.

My contention is that the government grant system has corrupted university research in particular and all research in general.

These pseudo scientists cannot accurately tell me what the weather is going to be three days from now! But they can tell us “we’re all gonna die ™️“ in 20 years from either extreme cold or burn to death? Ummmm.......no. Don’t think so and not buying it.

Yes, and looking at the temps in my area compared to the average, we are 10 to 17 degrees cooler during the day on any given day for the last two months.

The 1950s domino theory was successfully used by the government-military-industrial complex to expand in wealth confiscation, importance, and power. That is why the government tough feeders are trying that angle out again. Really the domino theory proved to be wrong and resulted in a significant loss of American life and wealth. Any foreign country that wants communism should not be stopped by bombs because socialism/communism is the biggest suicide bomb ever invented.

If the carnivores cannot handle the heat, it means more herbivores and more plants due to increased CO2 levels. Green morons dont even realize their green planet requires warmth and CO2. And why investigate nuclear winter and not an ice age winter ? Shows bias.

Cool! Sim City. I loved that game. I used to hate it when the aliens attacked and destroyed half my city though.
