Researchers say it would be cheap and doable to dim the sun to curb global warming

It would be doable, but would it be wise?

Researchers say they’ve looked into how hard it would be to spray chemicals into the atmosphere to block the sun and curb global warming — and it would be neither technically difficult nor too expensive.

The researchers, in a new study, did not make any judgments about whether it should be done, but they did “show that a hypothetical deployment program starting 15 years from now, while both highly uncertain and ambitious, would be technically possible strictly from an engineering perspective,” said Gernot Wagner, research associate at Harvard’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and codirector of Harvard’s Solar Geoengineering Research Program.

The researchers envisioned a fleet of just under 100 tankers flying just over 60,000 missions a year by the 15th year of the project.

Not everyone thinks such “solar geoengineering” is a good idea.

Didn’t CAL try this once?

They called it SMOG and we spent gazallions to ‘clean the air’ so we could ‘see the sun’ again.

Now some genius says we should block the sun out.

Wish the ‘foolz’ would make up my mind which way I am supposed to ‘root’.....(good luck with that)

Now they really sound like one of those cheap sci fi movies you’d watch on TV late at night or on a weekend afternoon.

They have just admitted that the SUN controls climate on earth and NOT man.

When was the last time a Harvard scientist won a STEM Nobel prize? The place is a lot more mediocre than you would think.

That's only two missions per day per tanker.

However, how much greenhouse gasses would 100 tanker flying 200 missions per day emit? Just enough to offset their cooling mission?

"...to block the sun and curb global warming..."

So they're admitting the sun is what heats the earth. Why not plant trees at 60,000' to absorb the excess CO2 while they're at it?

The most depressing aspect of this is that just about the time we stop these crazies dead in their tracks, permanently, there will be another and then another harebrained scheme for destroying the planet in the name of saving the planet.

I’ve lost count of the number of bad sci-fi channel movies that start this way.

That's 600 missions per plane in 365 days..................

They then subjected the virtual Earths to extreme trajectories of environmental change, consisting in either a "global warming," i.e. a linear, monotonic increase in temperature, or a "nuclear winter," i.e. a progressive cooling, such as that which could follow multiple nuclear detonations or an asteroid impact.
people never read the articles any more. although, they did bury this 10 or 12 paragraphs down.

This sounds like the opposite of what a young Lex Luther tried in Smallville. He ended up bald and hating his good friend Superboy.

That’s assuming there is truly an excess. I believe the earth is constantly balancing itself to counter things like massive forest fires, volcanos, earthquakes....and we’re worried about smoke from a coal plant (thought I do believe in the newer protections).

There was a point where I used to listen to NPR on Fridays (their science-Friday chat)...maybe fifteen years ago. So they had this environmental expert on and a caller phoned in and asked how the sun affected the Earth’s weather. The response...ZERO affect. The expert went through a 60-second response and just moved on. I went and looked up the guy and his degree/background. It was from such-and-such university, and then I looked up what it’d take to get such a degree. No requirements on solar studies.

The problem here is that we have a number of ‘experts’ around....who really aren’t experts. And we have little else to do with them.
