* The number of Americans filing applications for jobless benefits increased to a six-month high last week.

* The data could raise concerns that the labor market may be slowing.

* Initial claims for state unemployment benefits rose 10,000 to 234,000 for the week ended Nov. 24.

* It was the highest level of claims since the mid-May, the Labor Department said.

The number of Americans filing applications for jobless benefits increased to a six-month high last week, which could raise concerns that the labor market could be slowing.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits rose 10,000 to a seasonally adjusted 234,000 for the week ended Nov. 24, the highest level since the mid-May, the Labor Department said on Thursday. Claims have now risen for three straight weeks.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast claims falling to 220,000 in the latest week.

The claims data included Thanksgiving Day on Thursday. Claims tend to be volatile around holidays. The Labor Department said no states were estimated last week.

The four-week moving average of initial claims, considered a better measure of labor market trends as it irons out week-to-week volatility, rose 4,750 to 223,250 last week.

The claims report also showed the number of people receiving benefits after an initial week of aid increased 50,000 to 1.71 million for the week ended Nov. 17. The four-week moving average of the so-called continuing claims rose 19,750 to 1.68 million.

I could tell the economy was starting to soften the past couple months look like Obama years for me

The left made statements that they don’t care who gets hurt when they do whatever they can do to crash the economy, they don’t care who loses their homes or who commits suicide, or who is financially destroyed, just as long as it gets ride of the the Orange Man. They know going into 2020 if the economy is shit, Trump is done.

No. Thousands/millions do, but most of the apps are caught before benefits are paid. Some do get away with it.

They know going into 2020 if the economy is shit, Trump is done. ........................... And of course another 8 years of their type of failed economy will be blamed on Trump. People who make good choices in life don’t end up on the unemployed lines. Those who make poor choices are never responsible for them, and its always the other guy’s fault when they end up the way they do. I would think the biggest contributor to the jobless claims is unskilled labor. Skilled labor is always needed. With 14K laid off by GM, there may be a few more claims, but GM is opening more factories and there will be more jobs. I am not an economist, but I can predict higher salaries, higher taxes, and higher prices for everything. How much will that ole 5 cent 4” Tree Musketeer candy bar cost in 10 years? Its 78cents in Walmart now. Hey, middle income worker, not a dam thing has changed since 1957. We make more now, and what we make today only buys what we could afford in 57’ when we earned 5K a year. The rich get richer, the poor get poorer, and the middle class remains spinning wheels.

Unemployment rates are at a 59 year low.

Blacks and Hispanics have the lowest unemployment ever recorded.

Women have very low unemployment rates right now.

So what does the press report. Highest claims in six months...

Seems about equal doesn’t it.

You have to come off looking like a fool to dis Trump these days.

What an ignorant statement.

I think this is due to two factors.

1. THE SEASON.
2. Illegal immigrants

RE: 1. THE SEASON.

Makes no sense, shouldn’t THE SEASON be a huge hiring season?

I should have clarified. Sure, Christmas Season brings a lot of seasonal hires.

I was referring to people that work in LAWN CARE and ROOFING. They are more likely to claim unemployment than to take a job in a department store.

Yes, the season.

Highway and most other construction in the northern states just stopped for the winter.

Major plant outage work for refineries, chemical plants and power plants normally shuts down this time of year and picks up after the first of the year.

DEER season! An amazing number of people ask their bosses for a lay off during hunting season and get it.

With sales down at the box stores there has not been the normal offset of hiring temps for Christmas that there was before Cyber Monday became a thing.
