The defeated opposition candidate in Georgias presidential election runoff said on Thursday he did not recognize the victory of his ruling party rival and called for peaceful protests on Sunday.
French-born Salome Zurabishvili, who had the backing of the ruling Georgian Dream party, won 59.5 percent of the vote in Wednesdays runoff, while opposition candidate Grigol Vashadze had 40.5 percent, the central election commission said.
Zurabishvili, who served as Georgias foreign minister from 2004 to 2005, will be her countrys first female head of state, though the presidency is now largely ceremonial and the prime minister and government wield most executive power.
Zurabishvili favors balancing Tbilisis aspirations to move closer to the West with a desire to avoid antagonizing Russia, with which Georgia fought a brief war in 2008. Vashadze had advocated a more robustly pro-Western line.
Political analysts say they do not expect the election result to trigger any serious unrest in Georgia, a country of 3.7 million people which hopes eventually to join NATO and the European Union.

The specter of this election is also factoring into Putin's current incursion into Ukraine.
Can’t blame them :)
“GOD BLESS AND PROTECT PUTIN” more than a few said here last year. Those exact words. I wanted to throw up then and I want to throw up now thinking about it.
He DID smash ISIS until Trump got elected to REALLY finish the job.
He GETS that our freakish morals are utterly destructive to a country and enforces them NOT happening in his.
But he IS NOT a good man nor an ally.
To paraphrase “The Godfather II”, do business with him, respect him, but NEVER trust him.
Oh. THAT Georgia! I kept reading the first sentence over and over, trying to make sense of it.
Yeah I thought this was another Stacey Abrams temper tantrum post.
Scaty Abrams at it again.
Reading the headline, I thought that Stacy Abrams had decided that she was actually the president of Georgia.
What a relief I was afraid it was another Stacey story
Soros & the NeoCons lost this one. Good.
The one who won is a supporter of Macron.
