The Guardian ^ | December 2, 2018 | Staff

Vice-admiral Scott Stearney, the head of US navy operations in the Middle East, has been found dead in Bahrain, with the military saying no foul play is suspected.

Stearney was found dead on Saturday at his residence in the Gulf country. He took up the post in May of commander of US Naval Forces Central Command – including the US Fifth Fleet – and Combined Maritime Forces.

“This is devastating news for the Stearney family, for the team at Fifth Fleet and for the entire Navy. Scott Stearney was a decorated naval warrior,” said a statement from Admiral John Richardson, chief of naval operations.

“At this time no foul play is suspected.”

"...found dead, no foul play is suspected..."

It would not be the first time in history a 59 y.o. man suffered a cardiac issue. Definitely sad yet it does happen.

Wonder what demons were tormenting him? Probably more personal than professional. Still when a senior flag officer commits suicide, the investigation must be comprehensive. Can only imagine what is really happening in today’s Navy. Its not your father’s Navy. IMHO he was probably involved with some ambitious cutie on his staff or in his command. Women at sea and in the ranks is a huge and natural temptation.

“Assisted” suicide? I would think those with a mental instability which might trigger a suicide would have been weeded out long before rising to such a high level of rank and command.

I also think it is fair to question how an officer who gets an annual physical, plus meets physical conditioning requirements suddenly winds up with a widow maker heart attack. One attack and lights out for good.

Go back and review corruption charges on the Virginia three who had DoD contracts (I think over 5-billion)...middle of last week. All were dealing on contracts which at one time or another....came under this guy’s direction/command. I think when they were arrested, he knew that they were going to spell the rest of the episode which would have dragged him into a corruption deal.

A bad NWO one bites the dust along with the three DoD contractors who bilked the Govt out of 8 billion during the time of OBotulism. The great purge of the enemy is now up and running. Lots more is going to come.

Great point and insight. Very sad if true. Shows the downside of a prolonged futile American involvement in these alien cultures. Some Americans begin to behave and adopt the habits and practices of the natives. He was as far from Notre Dame as he could possibly get. Still would not be surprised if he was having an affair with a subordinate.

This guy was a pretty straight arrow....you may be right, but I’ll doubt it for now.

Neither the nature of the annual physical nor meeting physical conditioning requirements mandated by the US Navy diminish much the possibility of a sudden medical issue such as a stroke or cardiac event.

They don't even do an ECG during those annual physicals that I am aware of and that annual physical requirements are really nothing...heck, here is a quote from the standards I saw: "...Event consists of running 1.5 miles as quickly as possible. Any combination of running or walking is allowed to complete event..."

That likely means you have to walk briskly to get a "medium" score...

What I am trying to say is let's wait until we have more information before we start accusing him of having an affair or doing some dishonorable thing. I don't know anything about the guy, he might be an Obama butt-boy or he might not. But I think we should hold off and give him the benefit of the doubt until we find out otherwise.

Oh, I’m not casting suspicion on the officer. It’s what may be going on around him or to him by outside forces that I wonder about.

Ahh. I misread...I had already read comments about what he was hiding and comparing him to Adm. Boorda...which would be a sad comparison...I think that had my thoughts colored when I read your post.

Except that I have seen reported that it has been declared to be an apparent suicide.

It could have been a health diagnosis of a fatal illness that involves a slow death such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS - Lou Gehrig disease) or multiple sclerosis. Both horrible ways to die as you become trapped in your own body. If I were diagnosed with either I might be compelled to contemplate taking my own life.

"...declared an apparent suicide..."

OK, that is pretty nutty for someone who should be regarded as stable.
The reports that I saw earlier simply listed him as dead at home. Suicide adds a twist to the story.
