Newly-elected ag chief promises audit of concealed weapons permit program (Florida)

TALLAHASSEE — Florida’s newly elected agriculture commissioner is vowing to conduct a “deep dive” into the state’s concealed weapons permit program once she is sworn into office.

Nikki Fried, who appeared on South Florida news programs on Sunday, said she has already begun talking about possible changes to the program with employees in the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Her push to revamp the program comes amid a likely legislative battle over whether the program should be moved to a different state agency.

Earlier this year it was revealed that there were lapses in the program that is currently under the control of outgoing Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam. Fried, who is now the only statewide elected Democrat, will take office Jan. 8.

Fried, who says she has had a concealed weapons permit for five years, contends that gun rights groups such as the National Rifle Association have too much influence over the operation of the program.

This past week it was reported that NRA lobbyist Marion Hammer has suggested placing Republican Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis in charge of concealed weapons permits. Hammer told the Tampa Bay Times that Patronis would “continue to run it properly.” Democrats in the state Senate, meanwhile, have filed a bill to transfer the program to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Florida transferred control of the program in 2002 from the Department of State to the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services at the urging of Hammer so that it was under an elected official.........(more at the link)

If the Dems want it transferred to FDLE they must feel they can muddy up the process somehow.

Transfer it to CFO Patronis, as Hammer suggested, and keep it in the hands of an elected Republican official.

Meanwhile let's see what the spineless RINOs in the state legislature finally decide if anything (still waiting for the open carry bill to pass, instead we got a horrible gun control law)

In Florida, the CCWs fall under the perview of the Ag comm. Just had mine renewed before she got in in January. We suspected she’d be pulling some crap like this. We also suspect she’s probably gonna make it harder to get one also.

New governor needs to move the control by executive order if it’s not locked in legally to the agriculture department.

Stupid really

Speaking of CCW, have you seen the new Depends with the hidden holster?

Selling like hotcakes in Florida.

Why the hell is an AG Commissioner elected
in the first place and why the hell is Agriculture involved with gun permits?
Florida is a big concealed carry state which is probably why the Communists worked to get this creature elected in the first place.

Legislature has to move it. Should be under the executive branch but not in the overall licensing board, which is very inefficient.

Her “election” should be investigated and deemed fraudulent, with Campbell seated as the true winner

OK rat face dem “commissioner”. The law is quite clear, SHALL ISSUE. Here is something for you to consider:

Section 29. Impeachment of Officers. The House of Representatives shall have the sole power of impeachment. The speaker of the House may appoint a committee to investigate alleged grounds for impeachment against any officer subject to impeachment either during or between legislative sessions; but a vote of two-thirds (2/3) of all members present shall be required to impeach any officer; and all impeachments shall be tried by the Senate. When sitting for that purpose the senators shall be upon oath or affirmation, and no person shall be convicted without the concurrence of two-thirds (2/3) of the Senate present. The Senate may adjourn to a fixed time for the trial of any impeachment, and may sit for the purpose of such trial whether the House of Representatives be in session or not, but the time fixed for such trial shall not be more than six (6) months from the time articles of impeachment shall be preferred by the House of Representatives. The Chief Justice shall preside at all trials by impeachment except in the trial of the Chief Justice, when the Governor shall preside. The Governor, Administrative officers of the Executive Department, Justices of the Supreme Court, and Judges of the Circuit Court shall be liable to impeachment for any misdemeanor in office, but judgment in such cases shall extend only to removal from office and disqualification to hold any office of honor, trust or profit under the State; but the party convicted or acquitted shall nevertheless be liable to indictment, trial and punishment according to law.

Hopefully she serves less time in office than that Pope that was poisoned.

When they come to take the guns, that is the time to use them. Think April 19, 1775.

Nuff said. You make a good point.

Though don’t want to make some poor uninformed apolitical cop the target of aggression that belongs to be directed to the real criminals, like this agriculture jerk.

Not that I have weapons. Especially after that canoe accident.

...why the hell is Agriculture involved with gun permits

It used to be handled by the Dept. of Revenue, an appointed position. While under them when it came time for renewal you had to get fingerprinted all over again, I believe renewal was every four years and the renewal fee was high.

With the lobbying of the NRA it got transferred to Agriculture Commission, which handles other things like consumer affairs, checking accuracy of gas pumps, scales weights and measures etc.

The Ag Commissioner is elected so answers directly to voters. Under the Ag Commission fingerprinting for renewals was eliminated fees dropped considerably and the permits were now valid for 7 years.

Putting it in the hands of the Ag Commissioner was a good thing. The Dems cheated their way into this with the Broward County bogus votes since the Repub was leading all night until Broward started its games.

I suspect some RINO back room deals were made not to challenge this so Rick Scott could squeak by to a Senate victory. Meanwhile the Repub controlled legislature can grow a spine and move it to another Repub controlled dept.

The sky is not falling - yet. An audit is nothing to fear, assuming it is legitimate. If there were lapses as the article states without reference, then they need to be fixed. Kinda ironic that she complains about NRA influence whrn it was that influence that gave her the authority.

“Florida’s newly elected agriculture commissioner is vowing to conduct a “deep dive” into the state’s concealed weapons permit program...”

Hey, Nikki Fried, are you auditioning to be the next stupid person elected (ala Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez) — I’m pretty sure Florida has a Governor and an Attorney General that are charged with matters related to the 2nd Amendment and the state of Florida...Not your swim lane, dumba$$!!!

Does your Governor need to reduce your budget, apparently you have a lot of extra discretionary money in your account just lying around for you to afford such folly…The Governor can fix that.
