Michelle Obama Is Done With the Gospel of ‘Lean In’

Michelle Obama set the record straight during an appearance at Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Saturday night, one of the many stops on her Becoming book tour. Speaking about work life balance, and finding a way to excel in your career and marriage, Obama spoke frankly about what works and what doesn’t — and that the expectation of “having it all” isn’t always feasible.

“That whole ‘so you can have it all.’ Nope, not at the same time,” Obama said. “That’s a lie. And it’s not always enough to lean in, because that shit doesn’t work all the time.” The crowd erupted at hearing the former first lady say “shit,” and Obama quickly apologized. “I forgot where I was for a moment!”

“Leaning in” is a method that Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg wrote about in her book 2013 book Lean In: Women, Work and the Will to Lead. Even Sandberg herself acknowledged that the “leaning in” wasn’t as effective as she’d like it to be.

“We are stuck at less than 6 percent of the Fortune 500 CEO jobs and their equivalent in almost every country in the world. There were 19 countries run by women when Lean In was published. Today there are 11,” Sandberg said in 2017.

Obama didn’t just talk about what doesn’t work. She also discussed how she found people to believe in her when she was growing up, because she couldn’t find support in traditional places. One high school guidance counselor told Obama that she wasn’t “Princeton material.”

She’s a nasty, vile creature. And I’m not referring to her saying $hit.

Classless, yet worshipped by the Leftist masses. Also, I remember reading that Moochie was surprised that she got into Princeton with the SAT scores she had. And I thought ‘doesn’t she realize she is an Affirmative Action recipient?’.

Be nice if he’d just go back to his husband and leave the rest of us alone.

“I forgot where I was for a moment!”

Interpretation: "I am as phony as my phony husband."

Has anyone else noticed how often she appears on TV shows? I think back to other First Ladies and their appearance on TV and cannot remember one. But then, those earlier First Ladies had some class.

“Has anyone else noticed how often she appears on TV shows?”

It helps not to watch TV in the first place.

SO, What Is Lean In Saying?

To me, Sandberg is saying that women need to spend time (hopefully in her nifty “Lean In Circles”) thinking and sharing and communicating about the things they can change in their professional and personal lives in order to better obtain their goals. To Sandberg, women have been held back by body language, speaking voice, and our tendency as women to shy away from speaking out because, essentially, we lack self-confidence.

I have to say that I totally agree with this. I get very insecure sometimes even writing these blogs or doing my shows and I have to remind myself again and again to just dive in, take the plunge, and trust my gut. It’s scary. But even scarier to me is not doing it, so I essentially force myself. For example, I didn’t even think this piece on Lean In was too hot (and my husband told me last night: “You can’t write it if you didn’t finish the book!”) but I decided on my own that I didn’t think that was the point. The point is to get the conversation going, about women, about us, about how we ideally want our lives to be, and how we want our work to be. So at the risk of failure and ridicule, I’m plunging in here.

Yeah, at least Sandburg has a job. What job did Mooschelle ever have that wasn’t handed to her? That was why her WH staff had to be so large, to cover up the fact that she didn’t have a clue what she was doing.

As a woman, I need to say that I am so sick and tired of all the bean counting in every human activity. God created men and women for a purpose - not to be the same, but to be complementary. So what if the majority of political leaders are men.

Women who have sufficient leadership qualities, and who voice the concerns of the majority of voters will win, and hopefully be good leaders. Example: Margaret Thatcher.

I honestly don’t know where this came from, but every time I read a quote from her, starting in 2009, I start hearing the theme of “The Jeffersons” in my head. It was a spontaneous thing.

She “leaned in” hard with her do-nothing hospital job, garnering $350K+ for figuring out how to turf poor people away from high-brow private hospitals to a county hospital.

Is that the Gospel that comes between the Gospels of Luke and John?
