A Top Huawei Executive Is Arrested in Canada for Extradition to the U.S.
The New York Times ^ | 05 Dec 2018 | Daisuke Wakabayashi and Alan Rappeport

top executive and daughter of the founder of the Chinese tech giant Huawei was arrested on Saturday in Canada at the request of the United States, in a move likely to escalate tensions between the two countries at a delicate moment.

The arrest of Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer, unfolded on the same night that President Trump and President Xi Jinping of China dined together in Buenos Aires and agreed to a 90-day trade truce. The two countries are set to begin tense negotiations in hopes of ending a trade war that has been pummeling both economies.

Those talks now face an even steeper challenge. The aim will be for the United States to ease its tariffs; in exchange, China will be expected to lower trade barriers and further open its markets to American businesses.

What’s more, Ms. Meng’s detention raises questions about the Trump administration’s overall China strategy. Beijing is now likely to pressure Canada to release her and to press the United States to avoid a trial.

“The arrest of a family member linked to Huawei’s founder indicates how the tension between the two sides is rapidly escalating,” said T.J. Pempel, a professor of political science at the University of California, Berkeley, who specializes in East Asian politics and economy.

‘Senator Ben Sasse, a Republican of Nebraska, linked the arrest to the American sanctions against Iran.’

She was arrested Dec 1, apparently before the Trump/Xi dinner at G-20... I find that interesting.

A “China habd” on twitter I like retweeted this:

“Background: ZTE said in a 2011 internal document (obtained by US Commerce) that it should learn from a Chinese company “F7” about how to evade US sanctions. And all industry insiders knew it was Huawei. “

An overt attempt by the Deep State to subvert Trump’s foreign & trade policies. I predict he won’t resist, as he will be labeled a Chinese colluder if he does.

About time. The Canadians conducted the arrest, presumably with Trudeau’s approval. Unless something really loopy happens (as in Chinese operatives rescue her from prison and smuggle her out of Canada), I expect the transfer to go through.

Ben’s Asse is more in control of our foreign policy than the man we elected President.

US sanctions on third party nations do not apply to other nations that don’t have sanctions on them.

If we do this, others can, too.

For instance, China can impose sanctions on Taiwan. If US companies do business with Taiwan, China can arrest US executives wherever they can and put them in Chinese persons.

This secondary sanctions regime is a NeoCon invention. It’s bad for us.

Chinese prisons, not persons.

Not sure what you’re saying but...

The crime would be selling US goods to Iran, not China goods.

I believe Trump’s policy is to kick Xi’s ass until he says uncle. So far, Xi hasn’t said uncle. Hence the “tariff man” tweet, in response to the fact that (1) Chinese tariffs on US-made autos haven’t actually gone down and (2) China is putting out the usual PR release about buying US commodities (that they would have bought anyway, and isn’t what this trade war is all about - IPR protection for US companies) as their definition of trade liberalization.

The Chinese government deals with the US as if it were just another less-developed country from which it buys commodity inputs. To change China’s policies, we need to rearrange the country’s face, rather than give it face.

We’ve always had this option. We’ve just never exercised it. Under Trump, now we have. Which of our allies is going to arrest Americans on China’s behalf? And which of China’s allies is going to arrest Americans to satisfy Beijing? Not any country that doesn’t want Uncle Sam cutting it off from the world economy. This is what hard power looks like. It’s not just China that’s capable of doing it (via its threat to punish airlines over websites re Taiwan).

Dubya said you’re either for us or against us. He wasn’t serious. Trump is.

Related to Iran.

Interesting.

Hua wei provided fiber optic defense networks to Taliban and Hussein.

Probably doing the same for Iran.

""The Canadian police, at the request of the United States, arrested a Chinese citizen who had not violated any US or Canadian law," the embassy said in a short statement on its website."

This event will not go gently into the night. Tensions rising and this will not go away . . . anytime soon!

It has? The stock market in the US has been weak lately but other than that we seem to be doing quite well still.

Trudeau will fold like a cheap suit once the Butchers of Beijing arrest some Canadian citizen for “espionage”.

That would depend on how much the Chinese want foreign direct investment. Random arrests of foreign executives would put a damper on that. That is China’s Achilles heel. It needs that investment.
