SF crime epidemic: ‘Porch pirates’ swiping packages from doorsteps
SF Chronicle ^ | December 6, 2018 | Heather Knight

Everybody knows San Francisco is the city with glittering streets — well, glittering because of all the puddles of shattered glass from car break-ins. But there’s another pervasive property crime here that doesn’t get as much attention because there’s no evidence left behind. It’s called “porch piracy,” and it’s the swiping of packages off people’s front steps. All that’s left is an empty doorstep and the resident’s frustration.

Won’t be long before fedex, ups, usps are going to require “package” boxes where they can deliver your packages.

This isn’t just in Sam Framfrisco.

Its happening all over and drivers are getting scared to even stop their trucks to make delveries.

Sounds like a good way to take care of SF Sidewalk poop.

Small Amazon boxes hold used cat litter quite well.

Seriously though, this happens everywhere. Walmart has taken notice and now has a "ship to store" option for their on-line shopping service. And walmart.com has almost as much stuff as Amazon, and for the same price.

A couple months ago, after a long search I found my guns that had been lost in a tragic boating incident. The gunsmith had the repairs guns delivered to my house where they were stolen by a porch pirate. Yea, that’s the ticket.

Put junk out to the curb and the trashman won’t touch it.
Put a sign beside it that says $20, and someone will steal it!

I hear that one of the companies has their delivery people taking a photo after they’ve left a package at the door. At least they can prove it WAS there.

Amazon implemented this option quite some time ago. When I buy something from them, I have the option of delivery to an address or a drop-spot. The closest to me is a grocery store about 1.5 miles from me. Amazon sends me the box number and a passcode via email, then I go and get it.

Used it a couple times and it works pretty well.

Even not so large cities.

Wasn't there a CA muni last year whose PD set out bait packages to trap the porch thieves?

There are deck boxes you can buy. Screw them down to the porch. As soon as a package is inserted and the lid is closed and a flip of the switch, it’s locked. Can only be opened with a key. Very handy in town where stolen packages are prevelent. Have your package put in your garage, a shed and have your carrier lock the door when they leave. There are many ways to thwart a would be robber. Get creative.
