THE WAR ON STANDARDS, STEM EDITION
Power Line ^ | DECEMBER 4, 2018 | PAUL MIRENGOFF

Posted on 12/06/2018 10:04:48 PM PST by george76

Heather Mac Donald has written and spoken extensively about how identity politics is hampering America’s ability to maintain its dominance in STEM fields. Our main competitors, most notably China, are focused on making sure the best scientists, mathematicians, and engineers are doing the work. They care nothing about gender. And they spend virtually every dollar related to STEM on hard research and analysis.

The U.S., by contrast, is preoccupied with the gender and (to a lesser extent) the race and ethnicity of who is in the lab. And we pour money into promoting identity politics in STEM.

Indeed, Elizabeth Harrington of the Washington Free Beacon reports that the National Science Foundation has spent over $62 million on “intersectionality” studies in the STEM fields “with the goal of transforming science labs into test tubes for identity politics

...

Mac Donald nails it when she concludes:

[T]he extraordinary accomplishments of Western science were achieved without regard to the complexions of its creators. Now, however, funders, industry leaders, and academic administrators maintain that scientific progress will stall unless we pay close attention to identity and try to engineer proportional representation in schools and laboratories.

The truth is exactly the opposite: lowering standards and diverting scientists’ energy into combating phantom sexism and racism is reckless in a highly competitive, ruthless, and unforgiving global marketplace.

Driven by unapologetic meritocracy, China is catching up fast to the U.S. in science and technology. Identity politics in American science is a political self-indulgence that we cannot afford.

There is truly nothing they can’t ruin. Sports, STEM, parades, Christmas, the list just goes on and on.

At least we’ll have more trannie scientists when China nukes us all to hell.

Why would China bother, if this keeps up. We’d debauch ourselves to hell first.

O, the stories that could be told.....

In STEM fields, competence must be the primary concern.

Otherwise, more FIU Bridges, Millennium Towers(SF), SF Transit Centers, Centralia PAs etc.....

Back in the 50’s and 60’s we all knew from first hand experience that males did better at math and females did better in English. Civics was about equal as were languages.

On the sciences I’m not sure as I went to an all male high school (Junior High was mixed). The girls were generally smarter than the guys in many areas, which is a known condition of early learning studies.

The best thing to do is to let the students pick what they want to learn at the higher levels. That way if they are smart enough, they will learn what they want for their future avocation(s).

All this gender fighting is the Left’s way of keeping us split and fighting with each other, an old Stalinist trick from the 20’s and 30’s.

The basics of learning are gender neutral. Everyone has to take math, English, a language, the old Civics (at least they used to), history, etc. Our job should be to insist that school texts “teach” the subject, not create an artificial battle between the sexes which is counterproductive.

A former Korean OSS/CIA officer once told me about Red China, “If they need 100 scientists for a project, they will educate/train 100 scientists for it.”

We had better concentrate on creating scientists, teachers, thinkers, inventors, etc. and stop looking under their skirts and down their pants for their gender.

This is America. Let anyone who wants to learn, learn!

Big Government is destroying this country.

All of the bigs are.

It leads to layers and layers and massive over-refulation and rules and other complete bullsh1t.

No one ought to think its by accident. Globalists and new world order folks know there are multiple angles to taking down a sovereign superpower.

For example, it’s why our public education system has deliberately sucked so long and been allowed to consume so much money. It takes money away from effective things while at the same time it masively funds deliberately wanted, inferior things.

There is a movement to add an “A” to STEM so the arts are included with science, technology, engineering, and math. I snuck into a democrat rally once, and saw it was on a board of issues. It sickened me. BTW, the dem lost.

Yes, and the worst of it starts with bad staff attitudes against boys in elementary schools.

Very early in life, girls are subjected to training about the evils of “males.” The garbage about “toxic masculinity” is nothing new beyond the phrase. We saw it in the ‘70s.

Our corporation bends over backwards to hire women into the engineering department. Then for the 2 years they are in the group who does actual engineering, which usually consists of getting real engineers to do their work for them, or constantly getting $1000 cash awards for doing the most mundane things possible. After 2 years the company always has some invented “management” position to move them to where they bleed company resources on boondoggles and endless meetings

Bring back “First to Invent” and dump “First to File” so that America’s patents stay American.
Nothing is more detrimental to our technology than this socialist European model for intellectual property.
American companies invest in research and development only to have industrial spies from foreign governments take copies of the technology and file patents blocking us from our own inventions.

I think I know the end result of all of this diversity and inclusion BS. I have a personal story to that I think will demonstrate the end result. I realize it’s just anecdotal but I think that we will see more of these types of actions in the near future. So here’s the story.

I work in a technical aspect of the industry that I work in. There are a number of industry groups and associations that people that work in the field can join. I was a member of one of these groups, I’ll just call it the society.

The society puts out a monthly technical publication. I don’t have time to read them when they arrive, so they get stacked up on the end table.

One day I decided I had to do something with this 2 ft. tall stack of magazines on the end table so I started sorting them. I was sorting the original stack into 2 stacks: stack 1 had articles that were either above my head or that I was just not interested in reading; stack 2 had articles that I wanted to read.

About half way through the sorting I came across a magazine with an article titled something like, a study of proportion of women in the industry. I combined all there stacks into stack 1 and dropped them all in the trash. I’m no longer a member of the society, I still get their emails, they’re flagged as spam and get deleted with the rest of the junk email.

So that’s what I think is going to happen, any of this BS a person can opt out of they will. Maybe they’ll figure it out when participation shrinks enough that organizations start asking themselves, “Where did all the people go?”, but I doubt it

Several years ago, my son was on a competitive high school robotics team through USFIRST.

They tried to recruit more girls onto the team and were somewhat successful, but with one exception, they all gravitated away from the robot, mechanical and computer stuff to the marketing and presentation side of the team.

There, they excelled. Their work pulled us into the World Championship tournament even though the robot was rather mediocre.

They went to where they were comfortable and did what they had interest in.

Then, my kid went to a true geek school that specialized in high level engineering and Cyber. Of the 400 or so on campus students, only a handful were female, despite their efforts.

He now works at NASA on a satellite mission. I haven’t asked what the breakdown is among the engineering staff, but I think I can make some assumptions.

There are girls who are great at the STEM stuff, but not when you force it on them.

The last company I worked full time for was in a very technical market. The company was well funded, by wealthy owners, and by an aggressive grant seeking department. There was a lot of hype about the technologies we worked on.

Anyone who was competent was: a male, over 50, and fired or quit within a year.

There were no metrics on technical ability — you could not earn raises or promotions for being valuable and hard working.

Backstabbing, lying, and sabotage were the primary activities.

There were a disproportionate number of freaks — gender freaks, retards, foreigners, etc.

It seems they were trying to see how effed up a company they could build.
