The 6 reasons why Huawei gives the US and its allies security nightmares

The detention in Canada of Meng Wanzhou, Huawei’s CFO and the daughter of its founder, is further inflaming tensions between the US and China. Her arrest is linked to a US extradition request on undisclosed charges, but China says it’s a human rights violation and is demanding her swift release.

Behind this very public drama is a long-running, behind-the-scenes one centered on western intelligence agencies’ fears that Huawei poses a significant threat to global security. Among the spooks’ biggest concerns are:

There could be “kill switches” in Huawei equipment…

The Chinese firm is the world’s largest manufacturer of things like base stations and antennae that mobile operators use to run wireless networks. And those networks carry data that’s used to help control power grids, financial markets, transport systems, and other parts of countries’ vital infrastructure. The fear is that China’s military and intelligence services could insert software or hardware “backdoors” into Huawei’s gear that they could exploit to degrade or disable foreign wireless networks in the event of a crisis. This has led to moves in the US to block Chinese equipment from being used.

Google’s new Titan security key is made in China. Don’t trust anything coming from a Communist dictatorship.

Only one mention of Iran, and it’s halfway into the article.

Never trust Huawei.

A decade ago I sold a research report to them. The hassled me and didn’t pay. Then I told them I would send a letter to every editor in telecom magazines around the world explaining how they were screwing me over.

They paid soon thereafter.

“Google’s new Titan security key is made in China. Don’t trust anything coming from a Communist dictatorship.”

China is not only the World’s largest police state in absolute terms, it is in percentage terms as well. A higher percentage of the population is dedicated to monitoring and policing the rest of the population, of any nation on Earth.

Routine things, like a hotel stay by a foreigner, produce a report, and someone has to review it. There is no way that a top priority Intelligence target like a mass market encryption key or identity token would not be massively targeted by their Intelligence Services. No way at all.

I guess that as a minimum the use of that token would serve to mark all traffic and views, so that artificial intelligences could mine through each individual’s online activity, analyzing things about them that they don’t even realize themselves, and searching for any and every expression of political thought.

Of course, the Intelligence services would require a way to capture the keys, so they could have covert access to whatever is being “secured”. In the same way that a gun safe shows the burglar where the valuables are, the use of a security mechanism might help the Intel folks focus right in on the juicy stuff, getting right to the needles in the haystack.

To enable effective data mining by AIs, I would anticipate that it provides for a computationally efficient method of compromising or collecting keys, to allow for really massive, routine monitoring.

Beyond just spying and profiling, these devices could (theoretically) be configured to enable the communists to disable them on command, in a denial of service attack.

Back in the 80’s we sold the Poles and hence the Soviets lots of com equipment that had a hidden kill switch that would have played hell with the communications during a war.

I’ve been in the industry more than 30 years, Huawei Optix 6800 OTN DWDM systems are used as internet backbone transport (Gig, 10Gig, 40Gig, 100Gig) for several companies, supplying service to government agencies to include the DOD. Very sensitive connections to be entrusting to Chicom gear, the sooner they get rid of it the better. Most folks are only aware of the phone hardware made by Huawei, most are not aware of the other gear that’s been used all over the country for years and years. I’d be more concerned with that

Per Charlie Gasparino of Fox Biz, the Democrats are going to hold hearings on Google, Facebook, and Amazon for their abuses (i.e., sale) of their users privacy data.

And the Liberals in Silicon Valley were trying to get the Democrats elected.

Hahah.
