Macron's top-down approach to fighting climate change serves as a cautionary tale

While world leaders gather in Katowice, Poland, for the COP24 climate summit, protesters in the streets of Paris have successfully forced French President Emmanuel Macron's hand, undercutting his efforts to impose a carbon tax on French energy sales. Macron has made climate change and lowering greenhouse gases a central component of both his domestic and foreign policies, only to face dramatic failure at the hands of his "yellow vest" countrymen.

Macron's popularity has been low in France for months, and has now fallen to just a 23% approval rating. But the rioting across his country sends a frightening signal to politically powerful advocates seeking to save the planet from its predicted catastrophic 2 degree Celsius average temperature increase by midcentury.

But a day later Macron backed off from his so-called "green taxes," and now his government, and its pursuit of climate solutions are in crisis.

As exhausting and daunting as it may be, climate leaders must pay heed to the cries of France's yellow vests, and the angry masses inside their own nations. A corporate boardroom or gathering of CEOs may be more comfortable. But curing the world's climate catastrophe, pulling humanity from its existential brink, requires nothing less than solutions found, and supported, across whole societies.

Never a word from the Chicken Littles about the pollution in China, the highest in the world, over twice that of the U.S. France is squeaky clean by comparison, yet they’re getting taxed into poverty because of it.

Top down approach

LOL. Now that's funny. Just like Stalin's "top down approach" to fighting famine didn't work, or Mao's "top down approach" to increasing productivity didn't work.

The global cabal is not wasting its time with this push to bankrupt the masses with their scheme to make energy too expensive. When they achieve this, they will have the world standing in line to do their bidding, including killing their own children, elders and “unfit” in order to bring the world population down to their specification.

Delusional. Man can control the Earth’s climate? None of the climate models even work. Far better to figure out ways to adapt to climate change than the fool’s errand of how to control it.

It is all about power and the redistribution of wealth. It is a globalist pipe dream.

Macron's stategy isn't any different from that of any politician who pushes the "climate change" agenda - it inevitably means policies that hurt the working and middle class financially at little or not cost to the elites.

I'm hoping that this political backlash will bring Macron down, even Melenchon, the Socialist candidate, was less repulsive than this narcissistic mouthpiece of Brussels and the Open Society Foundation.

All the B.S. about "climate change" and greenhouse gases is a total red herring.

If it wasn't, they would be pushing to build NEW nuclear power plants, not shutting down the ones they already have.

Just SHOOT THE CROWDS. After all, the police have guns.

Oh, never mind, we’re holding that in reserve, until later./

Um, yeah. Because socialism is the cure to everything. And since we have stubbornly refused to accept socialism, it is time for those who lust for power to come up with more lies and pound us even more heavily with the "need" to accept socialism now, or else.

No, thanks. How about sending Laurie Garrett to go live where socialists are in power, so she can see for herself just how utopian those countries are?

I never notice the pro carbon taxers mentioning the footprint of War. I read somewhere the fuel pollution from military dropping bombs, and filling the air with particulates offsets the carbon emissions from military aircraft. Thus war is good for the environment. But you working peons better pay up for your pollution. 😂😂😂😂😂

Is it just a coincidence that “fighting climate change” ALWAYS involves raising taxes to astronomical levels?

...

They aren’t saving anything. It’s a scam to steal money from the people. That’s why there are riots.

Even if the warming is real, it’s still a scam. The politicians won’t fix anything, but they’ll continually steal more money for the effort.

Pres Trump ended US participation in the Paris agreement on climate change, which was designed to cut carbon emissions.

The Paris Agreement is the cause celebre now giving Macron huge problems.

Since entering office, Pres Trump reversed many of Obama’s regulatory mandates that hurt fossil fuels and assisted renewable energy in the marketplace. Trump signed a sweeping executive order in late March at the Environmental Protection Agency that rescinded six of Obama’s climate change executive orders.“

Trump's Exec/Order represents a clear difference between how Trump and former President Barack Obama view the role the United States plays in combating climate change,” CNN reported at the time. The Obama administration became a big “hedge fund” trying to finance and promote renewable energy technologies at any cost, Thomas Pyle, president of the libertarian Institute for Energy Research, told TheDCNF. “The entire eight years of Obama, the Department of Energy was basically a hedge fund — and a bad one — for renewable energy for wind, solar and biofuels,” he said.

Critics of Obama’s renewable energy agenda believe it’s likely a President Hillary would have doubled down on Obama’s renewable energy initiatives.
“If Hillary Clinton had won, then we would have 4-8 more years of the Obama trajectory. Everything labeled ‘progressive energy policy’ would have just ramped up,” Marlo Lewis Jr., a senior fellow at the free-market Competitive Enterprise Institute, told TheDCNF. “So the market would have been even more tilted in favor of so-called ‘green energy companies.

President Trump has basically changed the direction,” he said. (hat tip The Daily Caller report)

I’m looking at her pic. Interesting how the fashion in liberal eyeglasses has changed over the last couple of years. From narrow rectangular to bigger and rounder. Liberals do a lot of signaling with their glasses.

Anyway, here is the money quote:

“The marketplace, locally or globally, cannot replace government action and regulation of greenhouse gas emissions.”

Her complaint is that Macron’s approach is too “corporate” and treats big business too much as an equal partner in implementing the climate change agenda. She wants government to take stronger command with business more subordinate. This makes her approach even more top-down than what she’s complaining about, but of course she doesn’t see it that way. To her it’s more “democratic” since the government would be acting on behalf of teh pipples.

catastrophic 2 degree Celsius average temperature increase by midcentury.

Give me a break, give me a break, break me off a piece of that kit kat bar. 😂😂

Anyway I'll ask for 1000th time, are there are "climate change solutions" that aren't just a tax hike that makes energy more expensive for normal citizens? It's almost like the tax hikes are the point.

It might be 2 degrees warmer in 30 years so we must raise taxes so Pierre Shmoe can't afford to drive to work. Makes sense.
