Full Title: Could Elon Musk save the jobs of GM workers? Tesla founder 'would be interested' in taking over General Motors' idled factories
Elon Musk is eyeing General Motors' once-occupied plants.
The billionaire tech mogul said it's 'possible that [Tesla] would be open' to taking over automakers' old plants, such as the five factories closed by GM last month.
The comments came during Musk's wide-ranging interview with CBS' '60 Minutes.'
GM CEO Mary Barra announced in November that the car manufacturer would close five factories in North America and lay off some 14,700 workers as a result.
Musk indicated that Tesla could potentially look at scooping up the factories, joining a list of others who have indicated interest in creating jobs there in the wake of GM's decision.
'It's possible that we would be interested...that we would take it over,' Musk told interviewer Leslie Stahl.
Musk has purchased idled factories from other carmakers in the past.

He got a great deal on their current factory in Fremont after it was abandoned by Toyota.
fine, so long as you use your own dam money, not taxpayer’s
But not the UAW contracts, I’m sure.
your own damn money ....
Sort of what I was thinking - but Musk knows how to play the game. Probably already has 25 Dems lined up to ram this spending through Congress.
It was very sad seeing all those people at GM being told that they were out of a job, just weeks before Christmas.
Someone must have wanted for these people to experience pain at this time. There had to be better ways that could have been handled.
It would be great if another large corporation would buy the remnants of the GM companies and put many of these folks back to work. However, I’m not sure Elon Musk is the man to do it.
He’s been very flakey and unpredictable all summer long.
Maybe he’ll be backed by others in this venture, should he decide to take it on. Maybe it won’t just be him trying to impress people.
Bloomberg, November 20, 2018.
Almost ONE BILLION DOLLARS in subsidies and the place is nearly idle!
A billion dollar subsidy may pass the house, but I doubt it will get past the Senate or get Trump’s signature.
He is no match for the UAW.
Even if Musk could get a subsidized deal, as well as an initial deal to keep the unions out, even after signing a contract which prohibits unions, once these previously unionized employees are rehired, they will hold a vote, nullifying this portion of the contract, and put him out of business very quickly.
Forget any reprieve from the courts and Democrat Party which reside over all of these jurisdictions. They also depend on the UAW for their existence. They will always side with the unions and welfare minded workers. This is how they stay in power.
Musk cannot break this cabal up.

How much government money does he want to do that?

IIRC, that plant was a FORD plant before GM & TOYOTA too it over as a joint operation.
Calif lawmakers are threatening Mush with all kinds of punishment if he DOES NOT turn his facilities into UNION operations.
MUSK will not do that. NOT in Calif NOR in Michigan.
Besides, he cannot expand up or out, so he has outgrown that facility. He actually has TENTS on the land being used to work on chassis’.
Imho, the workers deserve a much more reliable employer than musk
Fremont Assembly was built by GM. It was never a Ford operation. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fremont_Assembly
Moonman62 - The Fremont, CA plant was co-operated by GM and Toyota called NUMMI. GM made the Geo Prism and Toyota made the Corolla. The differences was the badging of the cars. GM bailed due to bankruptcy. Toyota bailed because it was an opportunity to end manufacturing in the California land of crazy regulations. The same regs that convinced Toyota to Toyota Motor Sale Corp offices to Plano, TX.
You can bet Elon Musk is seeing this as an opportunity to leave CA also.
Had Guvmnt Motors been allowed to dismantle itself in ‘09, the industry would be far healthier today and more than just these few plants would be thriving under independent brands.
Only Tesla has emerged from the mess. Should have been several more. Such a lost opportunity.
Fords were built not far away in Milpitas from 53 to 83 they made a Lot of cars and trucks there.

They built Mustangs in that plant. I remember touring that plant as a young boy and just being in awe.
Now’s it’s the “Great” Mall....
Hes a megalomaniac
Sorry bud but your Fremont plant is underwater and the promises made in buffalo are falling flat
Your Obama gravy train is over so
Convince us youll sell cars night day and night
Or the joy ride is over
I do see Teslas everyday here in CA. AT LEAST 20-30
So thats all good
