Senate ducks filibuster on major sentencing reform with bipartisan deal
The Washington Times ^ | December 17, 2018 | Stephen Dinan

Senators linked arms and voted Monday to advance a new bill combining sentencing and prison reforms, setting up final passage later this week and creating the groundwork for a major bipartisan compromise.

President Trump had urged GOP Senate leaders to drop their longstanding objections and allow the bipartisan bill to reach the floor, and Majority Leader Mitch McConnell finally agreed, after the bill was changed a final time to win over some additional conservatives.

With those changes in hand, the measure cleared a potential filibuster on a 82-12 vote, far more than the 60 votes needed.

The Senate will now begin debating amendments, and some conservatives hope to temper the sentencing changes they fear will lead to bad actors being freed from prison time.

But Monday’s vote signals there’s a critical mass behind the bill, making passage likely.

“The product of years of negotiating and listening to each other is a bill that will reduce crime, strengthen faith in our justice system, support law enforcement, and give thousands of people a better shot at living a good life,” said Sen. Chuck Grassley, Iowa Republican and chairman of the Judiciary Committee.

Sounds like the Trumpster is trying to buy off the black vote. I for one do not feel sorry for anyone dumb enough to end up in the klink. There are however exceptions when the punishment does not fit the crime. The proof will be in the pudding when the recidivism rate is disclosed. I don’t think there will be any Willie Hortons released. Probably only deals with federal crimes. Am I right?

Not surprising the Dems would be highly favoring easing up on Prisoners......a good many of them are Democratic voters.

I can’t believe Trump would be that naïve to think this is going to win over the black vote.

This probably can only affect federal crimes. To my mind there are far too many crimes labeled federal that should be state. Even if a person crosses state borders to commit a simple crime like bank robbery, it should be treated as two state crimes rather than a federal crime.

There is way too much grandstanding and pretending to be "tough of crime" by senators federalizing crimes that should be kept at the state and local level.

The whole "hate crime" nonsense and the double-jeopardy evil that happens when a defendant is found innocent of a crime at the state level, but then found guilty of violating the supposed victim's civil rights at the federal level is a complete abomination.

Exactly. No border security or asylum reform but early release, reduced penalties and other Far left democrat favored BS, no problem.

Unless this bill explicitly requires that the prisoners being early released work on The Wall, I’m not sure that I can support the bill.

There is not a square inch of our so-called Justice system that is not demonically corrupt.

They need to get the real criminals back out on the streets so that they will have more room to imprison anyone that has ever worn a MAGA hat.

Nothing will strengthen faith in our justice system until the DOinJustice is purged and black robed thugs are expelled from the bench.
