MARYSVILLE, Washington -- Armed shoppers shot out the tires of suspected shoplifters trying to make a getaway from a Washington store.
Several people who work right next to the Coastal store are relieved that the accused shoplifters have been caught.
But how things played out with the shots fired by armed citizens concerned them.
Davene Tuninga said, "I think it's good that they did that, but yet what if there would've been kids around?"
Police say two people took off with power tools from a Coastal store late Saturday afternoon.
When they got to their car in the parking lot, a shopper tried to confront them and showed them his gun.
The accused shoplifters struck that man with their car as they took off, according to police.
That's when two more shoppers carrying guns confronted the thieves.
The armed citizens fired several shots, hitting two tires on the getaway car.
The shooting terrified Monica Medina, who works at her family's restaurant, "Like, 'pom, pom, pom, pom.' it's really, really bad, and I'm so really scared," said Medina.
Brandy Sundin says she immediately locked the doors at her business. "I think someone could've been seriously hurt, and it could've gone the other way. And had it, that would've been bad."
The accused thieves got a few blocks and ditched their car, but were caught soon afterward.
The two citizens with the guns didn't stick around to talk to officers.
Why ccw folks are not cops, nor should act like them.
Now if you want to go all Bronson, you dont do it out in the open in places that arent your house or gang ridden neighborhood.
>>>The accused shoplifters struck that man with their car as they took off, according to police<<<
The Pantywaists griping about this must have missed that little tidbit.
We know teachers in Marysville and they take their guns to school with them, and they are not alone. The good citizens in Marysville make it one of the safest places in Western Washington.
Great and funny story.
“The two citizens with the guns didn’t stick around to talk to officers.”
Because nothing good would have resulted from talking with the police.
They didn't act like cops.
They hit their target, they shot at bad guys, they didn't kill any dogs or innocent people, they didn't burn anything down.
*ouch*
What if the dog hadn't stopped to zhit?
He'd have caught the rabbit.
and the concerned citizens say, but what if but what if but what if there could have been kids around.
Exactly. All bets are off. Assault with a deadly weapon.
They probably went inside to replenish their ammo supply. Gotta love Coastal.
I guess they think that Kids never get run over by Cars.
Washington State (shall issue) has the highest percentage of CCW holders in the nation.
....accused this, accused that...yeah yeah, blah blah blah...if they ran the guy over and killed him ????...
You’re right.
It’s Washington and the authorities don’t want you confronting criminals because they don’t believe in doing that, either.
They did.
None were in danger of permanent injury or death.
They engaged and were active participants against others who did not steal from them or were threatening their lives.
They were shooting at vehicles that were not trying to run anyone down. Not to neutralize a life threatening threat.
This is not ccw behavior any court will endorse. The laws are very narrow for ccw people to actually lasfully use their weapons.
I am not saying I think its right, I am merely saying what the legal situation is.
Hi.
Imho, do not engage anyone with deadly force unless they are a threat to yourself, family or friends.

Here’s a pretty suscinct outline of Washington law:
Washington law allows for the use of force under certain circumstances. RCW 9A.16.020 outlines the circumstances under which a person can legally use force. The lawful use of force/self defense most commonly arises under three situations:
Self Defense
Defense of Others
Defense of Property
Self Defense
Washington Law allows a person to use reasonable force to defend themselves when they are being attacked or have a reasonable belief that they are about to be attacked. A person may not use more force than is necessary given the situation. The law does not impose a duty to retreat. This means that if you are in your home, you do not have to try to escape the situation before defending yourself. This is otherwise called, the Stand Your Ground Rule” in Washington. On the other hand, you cannot raise self defense if you are not allowed to be in the place you are being attacked in the first place. You do not have to actually be attacked or injured in order to defend yourself. Washington law allows you to defend yourself if you reasonably believe you are about to be injured.
Self defense is commonly used as a defense to:
Assault (DV)
Malicious Mischief (DV)
Disorderly Conduct (DV)
Harassment (DV)
Defense of Others
Washington Law states that the use of force is lawful whenever used to prevent an offense against another person. This means that under certain circumstances, you may use force to protect another person. Like self defense, defense of other requires that you only use a reasonable amount of force to protect another person. Also like in self defense, the person you are protecting must not be trespassing at the time of the incident.
Defense of Property
Under certain situations, a person may use force to defend against a malicious trespass or interference” with real or personal property. This means that if someone is entering your home or taking or damaging your property and they are doing so with an evil purpose, you can defend your property by force. The same rules apply to this defense, which is that you may not use more force than in necessary to defend your property.
