U.S. Holiday Retail Sales Are Strongest in Years, Early Data Show
Wall Street Journal ^

Shoppers delivered the strongest holiday sales increase for U.S. retailers in six years, according to early data.

Total U.S. retail sales, excluding automobiles, rose 5.1% between Nov. 1 and Dec. 24 from a year earlier, according to Mastercard SpendingPulse, which tracks both online and in-store spending with all forms of payment.

The figures suggest a stock-market swoon and partial government shutdown haven’t curbed consumer confidence and spending.

“Wall Street is running around like a chicken with its head cut off, while Mr. and Mrs. Main Street are happy with their jobs, enjoying their best wage increases in a decade,” said Craig Johnson, president of Customer Growth Partners, a retail research and consulting firm. A recent drop in gas prices has helped last-minute spending, he said.

And everybody was happy.

I don’t even recall any stories of the usual Black Friday brawls

I went to Best Buy yesterday for a couple of last minute items. It was packed and the shelves were bare.

I paid $1.89/gallon to drive there.

I just read the thread where Stephen King says Trump is leading the country to disaster and needs to be impeached.

I'm just not feeling it.

We own a retail Chocolate Shop in Georgia..... strongest retail sales we have ever seen.... Christmas Eve sales were more than double of last year.... entire month showed a 72% increase from last year... some can be attributed to our hard work building a business.... but the economy was a strong contributor factor..... Merry Christmas!

Will the government shutdown at least ease the traffic situation in the D.C. area tomorrow?

while Mr. and Mrs. Main Street are happy with their jobs, enjoying their best wage increases in a decade,”

And for the Fed, that is a sign of coming inflation. The Fed does not like to say decent pay increases for the tens of millions of Americans who work for hourly pay.

People won’t want to work hard if prospects are dismal.

This helps to offset the screaming headlines on Drudge about the market bottoming out.

Chocolate?

If we are in GA, me and my wife will try to visit.

Assuming some key details are worked out.

Glad things are going well for you.

“But But, the Govt is 25 percent shut down, I figured everyone is hiding underneath their bed shaking”

My hope is that the shutdown lasts long enough to put a big hurt on these government-sponsored thieves. With rents as high as they are in Washington, I just imagine the “DC natives” will get restless really fast when they are faced with eviction notices. Since 99% of them are RATs, let’s see what they have to say to Schmucky and Nazi after the first of the year.
