The Russian navy has begun trials of a nuclear-capable undersea drone that U.S. military officials believe could be used to stealthily target ports in major American cities.

The Tass news agency, quoting unnamed sources, reported that testing of the Poseidon strategic drone, mentioned by Russian President Vladimir Putin during his state-of-the-nation address to both houses of Parliament earlier this year, was now underway.

“In the sea area protected from a potential enemy’s reconnaissance means, the underwater trials of the nuclear propulsion unit of the Poseidon drone are underway,” the source told the news agency.

Not for nothing....I believe we should be having talks of some kind...with Russia. Going to the corner of the ring is not a solution.

Do we already know about this item. We better...

I posit again my prediction:

Nuclear submarine drones carrying multiple torpedoes, missles, and launchable submersible and aerial drones (disposable and/or returnable). Rotating deployments with command and control out of NORAD or similar.

Stationed around the world and available at a moments notice at a fraction of the cost of manned vehicles. No need for showers, food, mail call, electric lights, oxygen scrubbers, berthing, etc. Just a shell, sensors, command & control, engine/propulsion, and deployment mechanisms.

Remote kill commands similar to rocket launches in case of detection.

Maybe it could be used to target cities, but my guess is it's to counter an aircraft carrier group.

Putin must have watched the episode of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea where we had a bunch of autonomous Submarine Drones equipped with three Nuclear Missiles.

Great idea until the bad guys were able to hack them.

They’ll end up being deeper harbors.

I wonder if and to what extent Mattis was aware of this? What is/was his remedy to counter this? We’ll probably never know, since he abruptly quit.

Bolton must have some thoughts on this I would guess.

Why not have good relations? It saves us money & we get to live.

War is not in America’s interests.

A mobile, autonomous delivery system, capable of carrying nuclear weapons. Whatever could go wrong with that?
