President Donald Trump on Tuesday addressed the nation from the Oval Office to make his case for a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border as the partial government shutdown stretched into its third week.
NBC News fact checked his prime-time speech as it happened.
CLAIM 1: THE BORDER IS IN CRISIS
CLAIM 2: "LAST MONTH, 20,000 MIGRANT CHILDREN WERE ILLEGALLY BROUGHT INTO THE U.S., A DRAMATIC INCREASE."
CLAIM 3: TRUMP SAYS THE BORDER IS A "PIPELINE FOR VAST QUANTITIES OF ILLEGAL DRUGS."
CLAIM 4: "THE WALL WILL ALSO BE PAID FOR INDIRECTLY BY THE GREAT NEW TRADE DEAL."
CLAIM 5: "AT THE REQUEST OF DEMOCRATS, IT WILL BE A STEEL BARRIER, INSTEAD OF A CONCRETE WALL."
CLAIM 6: TRUMP NOTES THAT SENATE DEMOCRATS HAVE VOTED FOR BORDER BARRIERS IN THE PAST
CLAIM 7: "UNLAWFUL MIGRATION [IS] FUELED BY OUR VERY STRONG ECONOMY."
CLAIM 8: "EVERY WEEK, 300 OF OUR CITIZENS ARE KILLED BY HEROIN ALONE, 90 PERCENT OF WHICH FLOODS ACROSS FROM OUR SOUTHERN BORDER."
CLAIM 9: "WOMEN AND CHILDREN ARE THE BIGGEST VICTIMS, BY FAR, OF OUR BROKEN IMMIGRATION SYSTEM."
CLAIM 10: "IN THE LAST TWO YEARS, ICE OFFICERS MADE 266,000 ARRESTS OF ALIENS WITH CRIMINAL RECORDS INCLUDING THOSE CHARGED OR CONVICTED OF 100,000 ASSAULTS, 30,000 SEX CRIMES, 4,000 VIOLENT KILLINGS."

Crisis or no crisis. Either way we need to close the border.
Fact checking is long gone. Now it’s correct agenda checking.
Dems said it was a crisis just a few weeks ago when they were shrieking about children in cages. Now? Never mind?
Where can I read NBC’s fact checking of Pelosi and Schumer?
Poor NBC they just can’t convince Americans to believe NBC and not their eyes.
But I have learned this, just put the words “fact” and “checking” in front of whatever comes next and you can spew whatever BS you want. It must be true because it’s “fact checking.” And even better, when it comes from the media it’s extra extra credible cause, you know, the media or something.
#1 anyone should be able to read NBC say that it is only 51,000 not 60,000 because only 51,000 were caught, should see that 60,000 is probably a low ball estimate. Too bad most NBC viewers are not that discerning.
They claim there isn’t any Voter Fraud.

They are fact checking the definition of crisis? Really? Is a wedding cake for a homosexual couple cause for a national crisis that warrants legislation? But 600K to 800K illegal aliens sneaking in the country is not a crisis?

In a very short period of time the Wall would pay for itself by keeping these people out...

NBC Says: And though Trump has focused on the border, illegal immigration in the U.S. is being driven by another factor: people who overstay their visas. More than 701,900 people overstayed their visas during fiscal year 2017, according to the Department of Homeland Security. People who overstay their visas usually enter the country from an airport, not from the border.

I get impatient with arguments like the above.
There are two problems, one in the southern border and other in airports and other ports of entry.
I don’t understand why we can’t PLUG BOTH HOLES.
We can walk and chew gum at the same time.
What does this have to do with building a Wall?
The Wall plugs one hole and we can also plug the other hall simultaneously. This does not have to be an either/or thing.
Also, building a wall is a VISIBLE thing. It shows to the world and those from Central America that we are taking their lawlessness seriously and won’t tolerate it any longer. This has a visible effect on the other port of entries. Those who plan to overstay their visas will look at the wall and say to themselves, hey, this President is SERIOUS about illegals ( even overstayers ).
The above NBC statement is simply an irrelevant statement.
NBC SAYS: Smuggling of children is exceedingly rare. In the first five months of fiscal year 2018, Department of Homeland Security data saw the number of child trafficking cases rise to 191. Still, that number accounted for roughly 0.5 percent of border crossings during the same period.

So, we should ignore the 191 cases? Is 191 not a large number of children?
If I abused 191 children and endanger them, is that not enough reason to take action?
A Wall will help prevent the above. It will tell the child smugglers, we are going to make your task even more difficult if not impossible to accomplish.
This is NOT an argument against the Wall but FOR IT.
We have no reporters. We only have little 12 year old girls writing fantasies.
RE: It is true that hundreds of Americans die of drug overdoses involving heroin every week (the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated about 300 per week in 2017), and that the majority of heroin sold in the U.S. is coming from Mexico. But again, that’s mostly coming through legal ports of entry.

Again, this is an either/or argument just like saying that most illegals living here are overstayers and not border crossers.
How is this an argument against the Wall?
The word “majority” as in “majority of heroin” sold does not mean that none are crossing our borders.
If most of your termites are eating on side of your house and a minority are eating the other side, do you then ignore or not seriously deal with the minority?
PLUG BOTH HOLES — The border AND other ports of entry.
This is NOT an argument against the Wall, in fact, it is an acknowledgment that SOME if not A LOT of drugs (even if they are not the majority) are still pouring in from the border.
RE: here’s nothing in the new trade deal that earmarks funds for the border wall.
SO, FUND THE WALL for $5 Billion of our OWN MONEY ( which is a small percentage of the $25 Billion needed to complete the project ) and see if that section is effective in stopping illegal crossings in that section.
If it is ( and I believe it will be ), UP THE FUNDING.
We don’t have to get money from any trade deal. We have the money now. What we don’t have is the cooperation of the Democrats.
