Senator Ted Cruz suggests El Chapo pays for border wall

It’s day 18 of the partial government shutdown, and still no deal in sight to end it. And Democrats insist, they will not fund the wall.

But one very well-known Texas Republican says he may have the answer.

Texas Senator Ted Cruz says there’s one Mexican in particular he wants to foot the bill for President Trump’s border wall.

“We should take the money criminally forfeited by El Chapo, the Mexican drug lord, and from any other drug lords, and use that money to pay for building a wall, to pay for securing the border.”

Joaquin Guzman, known as “El Chapo”, is on trial in New York. He’s accused of international drug trafficking and conspiracy to murder.

The Justice Department wants to put El Chapo behind bars for life and wants $14 billion dollars in criminal penalties.

Cruz says his bill, the El Chapo Act, would take that money and use it to pay for President Trump’s border wall.

“The shutdown will end, the government will fully reopen.”

I don't know the legality of this but it sure is one way Mexico would pay for the wall.

The Democrats are about one thing only, hating Trump. They will never give Trump any victory.

Nothing else matters to them. Not policy, not special interest, not even self-interest.

The government will be shut down through 2021 unless Republicans cave.

Democrats cannot refuse this plan!

The people will go against Democrats if they do not support this plan!

I think this idea is an answer we have been waiting for. Excellent and what, exactly is to prevent the Chapo money from being used to prevent further deaths from DODs? I think it is, actually, a brilliant idea!

The Justice Department wants to put El Chapo behind bars for life and wants $14 billion dollars in criminal penalties.

Nice idea.

But (there is always a but)

El Chapo isn’t convicted yet. He hasn’t exhausted his appeals yet. And then you have to collect the money (usually not easy to do with these drug lords that have ways of hiding their money).

No, the Democrats must be beaten in to submission and be made to do the right thing no matter how loudly their cry.

WE can’t wait another ten years for El Chapo to work through our system of justice.

El Chapo and his ilk are the ones paying the Democrats not to build the wall.

We should probably assume Cruz includes a provision to build it now based on future collections from El Chapo. (Seems like the entire Federal gubmint works that same way.)

If this works, great. But if he wants to more simply defeat the Dems’ “we don’t want to waste money” bromide, try to take it from their expanded foreign aid request ($12B).

Bottom line -
This tries to frame the essential argument: Wall vs Never-Wall.
Away from: govt open vs shutdown

One minor tweak to bill renders Dem obstruction meaningless - make it a bill to reimburse the Defense Department for any wall construction costs that occur after Trump invokes its necessity as a national emergency and issues an executive order for the military to build it.
