FULL TITLE: Marc Thiessen: This is the stupidest government shutdown in US history. When will Dems get smart about it?

Barring some miraculous breakthrough, on Saturday the current government shutdown will become the longest in American history. But it has already hit another historic milestone: It is, by far and away, the stupidest government shutdown in American history.

In 2019, the federal government will spend a whopping $4.407 trillion. Yet Congress and the president are shutting down the government in a dispute between the $1.3 billion the Democrats have approved for border security and the $5.7 billion the president is demanding -- precisely 0.0998 percent of the total federal budget. In Washington, that is considered a rounding error.

Worse, Democrats are doing it over a border wall strikingly similar to one that they almost unanimously supported just five years ago. While House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., now says that "a wall is an immorality," back in 2013, she supported a bill that required the construction of 700 miles of border fencing. (Trump has called for a wall of "anywhere from 700 to 900 miles" long.) The bill negotiated by the Gang of Eight, which included current Democratic leaders Sens. Charles Schumer, N.Y., and Dick Durbin, Ill., declared that "not later than 180 days after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary [of Homeland Security] shall establish ... the 'Southern Border Fencing Strategy,' to identify where 700 miles of fencing (including double-layer fencing) ... should be deployed along the Southern border."

Yeah, but... the Democrats would not allow any of that $1.3 billion from being used to build the wall.

The shutdown is about making sure Trump can’t make good in his signature campaign promise in the hopes of unseating him in the next election. The US government spends $5.7 billion every 10 hrs, Pelosi can nap through that.

Marc Thiessen is one of my favorite pundits. Very clear and concise.

We can survive a Nancy Pelosi or a Chuck Schumer because they won’t be in their positions forever.

However, THIS COUNTRY WILL NOT SURVIVE A FOOLISH ELECTORATE THAT WILL PUT PEOPLE LIKE THESE IN POSITIONS OF POWER.

Really. It is too late for a wall now. Some 30 million illegals too late. That said, “The Wall” is a powerful symbol that for the first time we are fighting back. Trump (and we) can’t afford to lose this and the Rats can’t afford to let us win. This could actually be CWII.

It’s not about the money. It;s about being anti-Trump and keeping as many illegal aliens on the voter rolls as possible.

It's not about a wall. It's about egos. Pelosi won't allow President Trump to win on this. President Trump won't allow Nancy Pelosi to beat him. It's a matter of who blinks first.

Right now, President Trump is holding all the cards. The American people support him on border security and it's primarily Democrat constituents who are suffering under the shutdown. He knows he has the advantage and that's why he backed away from declaring a national emergency (that would've allowed both sides to save face).

He wants to break Pelosi.

"While Trump spoke calmly and rationally from behind the Resolute Desk, the Democratic leaders accused him of "pounding the table" and having a "temper tantrum."

While Trump told human stories, they complained about process.

They accused him of arguing that the women and children at the border were "a security threat" when he had just explained to the American people that they were victims, too.

They charged him with using the "backdrop of the Oval Office to manufacture a crisis, stoke fear and divert attention from the turmoil in his administration."

They were partisan and petty, while Trump came across as reasonable and even compassionate."

What shutdown? The democrat shutdown...

When the bathtub is overflowing, the first thing you do is shut the water. Then you worry about bailing it out.

...far and away, the stupidest government shutdown in American history Marc Thiessen

Make the shutdown a 'teachable moment':

Replace furloughed government workers with illegals ... They work cheaper AND it will show democrats what their open borders policies do to citizens.

After a few years - when DC workers haven't been paid in two years - AND their divorce rates, suicide rates, and drug addiction problems equal the rest of the country - then maybe we'll talk about ending the shutdown. Or just giving the jobs permanently to illegals - who also get to prey on the misery and lives of the unemployed workers they replaced...Let the 'eye opening' begin...

Yeah, I suspect Marc Thiessen will be looking for work soon... In this society the only times ‘truth can be spoken to power’ is when it’s some liberal screaming irrational hate at a conservative. NOT EVER when a person is critical of a democrat... that’s a ‘no-no’...

Marc Thiessen will be out of work soon...the POST is totalitarian - they won’t put up with anyone speaking outside of democrat talking points. (Might be a threat to the ‘news packets’ democrats send to their top editors)

This may start with buckets but it could well end up with rifles.
