Toyota boss to Trump: No such thing as American-made car
Fox Business ^ | 1/14/19 | Julia Limitone

Posted on 01/14/2019 11:47:19 AM PST by SoFloFreeper

Jim Lentz has a stern message for President Trump.

“There is no such thing as an American-made car,” he told FOX Business’ Jeff Flock during an interview at the 2019 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

.... his “biggest fear is tariffs” and he is hopeful that the United States Mexico Canada Agreement, which will govern $1.2 trillion in trade, will be ratified by Congress by the end of the year.

“Mr. President...it's important that we're able to compete with the rest of the world and keep our costs down. You're doing great things for the economy, let's keep this industry strong.”

Lentz added that “tariffs would be difficult” for the Japanese automaker which already produces “one of the most American-made cars”— the Toyota Camry, which has been a top-selling sedan for 17 years.

“There is no such thing as an American-made car...."

the Japanese automaker which already produces “one of the most American-made cars”

So which is it? Looks to me like Julia Limitone is a fake journalist trying to make Lentz and Trump are fighting.

And some hack at the Fox News web site is putting this as a top story.

There’s no such thing as a 100% American-made car.

No such thing as American-made car (and little else)

These globalist sellouts admit what they've supported all along.

The real headline should be what Lentz said that Julia Limitone BURIED in the story:

Toyota CEO to Trump: "You're doing great things for the economy"

Mr. Lentz, Toyota has fallen so far behind in quality, that your new Yaris economy sedans have to be manufactured by Mazda!

“There’s no such thing as a 100% American-made car.”

But there should be.

that there is no such thing as an 100 percent USA car, I agree

but there are some cars which are at least 80 percent USA

such as.. engine and body and transmission (and computer stuff) USA

then they can source some smaller parts from foreign makers, ok on mirrors and seat belts and hood ornaments and gas caps

I am flexible, I just want to keep USA’s manufacturing base intact, plus jobs of course

we need the least-invasive policies that will preserve the core of America’s maufacturing capability

(and remember, when war arrives, we need to have these plants for war material production!)

"But there should be."

Exactly, and restoring the tariffs would be a good start.

What he's saying is that imposing tariffs on imports to the U.S. will drive up the prices of imported materials and components used to manufacture cars here in the U.S.

There isn't a car anywhere that is made with 100% domestic content.

Here's the interesting thing: There probably never WAS such a car. At a bare minimum, U.S. auto manufacturers have been using foreign rubber for the tires on their cars ever since the rubber tire was invented.

Same with Boeing, at least the 787. The wings are made by Mitsubishi in Japan and shipped to Seattle, as are many other parts from all over the world. Seattle is where it’s all put together.

Mr. Lentz………….all my life I’ve built apartments, homes, office buildings and shopping centers and along that path I’ve used hundreds of “sub Contractors”...….duuh!!

So do you.

This doesn’t mean we don’t make (or lose) money. In the case of Japan Automakers....they make billions off the American consumer!

This is a tired old worn out insulting argument. Please find another.

I just want the majority of the profit and higher salaried workers to be U.S. Others can make the cheap, labor intensive parts. It is all about value added.

Kentucky Toyotas sell well in Japan, or so I’ve been told. Customers request them.

This link says A trio of General Motors crossovers based on the same platform—the Chevy Traverse, GMC Acadia, and Buick Enclave—were rated 90 percent American-made.
