Lynette Gabourel has been a federal employee for 38 years, including 10 years in the Navy. She said she has always been committed service. But now she's stuck, having been furloughed from her job at the International Trade Commission amid the longest government shutdown in U.S. history.
A single mother of three grown children, two of whom live with her, Gabourel is worried about paying her mortgage and her diabetes medications.
"For this month, I'm good," she said.
But if her situation continues into February, she said she's going to have to make a choice between insulin and her mortgage payment.
She has been enduring shutdowns for years but says this one is so senseless that it might be the last straw.
"I feel like I'm a pawn in some political game," she said.

Total BS.
And I don’t give a rat’s ass.
She should ask those two grown people living with her to chip in.
The cost of the wall in the bill is pocket change in the whole scheme of things.
Utter crap and lies. More fake news.
hey forgot to include that they can't feed the cat because they are eating the cat food.
Yep. Trump told Congress what it would take to get him to sign the bill. They can do it at any time.
During the time of the wun, a private sector story like this wouldn’t get a paragraph on page 18 in the local fishwrap.
My business closed. High taxes, regulations, insurance costs. A bunch of factors. Didn’t see CBS coming around and boo hoo hooing about me.
Thats easy, buy the insulin. There is probably a $20 copay for Fed BC/BS. Then call your mortgage company and tell them you will send what you can, and will make it up next month.
Someone playing it that close is used to juggling their bills.
Insulin is a racket... they have jacked the prices up to insane... the Execs at the companies should be put in jail...
Buy both then send Chuck and Nancy the Bill
I see at lest 2 problems...
“single mother of three grown children, two of whom live with her’
“least”
How much are her three grown children contributing, especially the two living at home?
Next, they’ll eat the cat.
She should ask her Democrat representatives to attend negotiation meetings and not beach parties in Puerto Rico.
38 years and no savings?
If Lynetteis a democrat, I say pay the mortgage.
Sorry.
