Skip to comments.Blue State Blues: Shutdowns Are Different When Republicans Fight Back

Spare, if you will, a moments pity for Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY). They are not exactly enjoying the government shutdown as they might have hoped.
Pelosi had already packed her bags and boarded the Air Force bus Thursday, along with a sizable delegation of House Democratic leaders, for her overseas junket.
She and her comrades were, no doubt, looking forward to touring NATOs billion-dollar-plus new headquarters in Brussels; posing for selfies on camelback by the pyramids in Egypt; grinning for photo-ops with the troops in Afghanistan.
Then the order came from President Donald Trump to prohibit her use of government aircraft.
Fly commercial, he suggested. There is a government shutdown going on, after all.
And, as Trump noted, 800,000 federal workers will continue to go unpaid unless Democrats stay in town to negotiate.
The bus went round the block and back.
Pelosis shock must have been quite something to observe.
She is not used to being treated like this, you see. She apparently expected she could cancel (ahem, postpone) the State of the Union address due to the shutdown and then disappear abroad.
Trumps response blocking Pelosis use of the aircraft was gutsy. It was a drain the swamp moment.
But the timing was pure comedy gold. (Adam Schiff, stepping off the bus, looked like hed seen a Russian.)
In a statement, Pelosis spokesman protested that the purpose of the trip had been to affirm the United States ironclad commitment to the NATO alliance, something the president had already done earlier that day.
Her real goal was to conduct an alternative foreign policy as she did after being elected Speaker in 2007, when she paid a friendly visit to Syrian butcher Bashar al-Assad.

I don’t think Bush I/II, Reagan, or even Ike...would have sent that letter to the House Speaker just as she got on the bus.
Have any of the faux-proles commented on the staggering Imelda Marcos-sized pile of luggage Pelosi was taking with her?
I’m sure half of it is makeup and the other half Johnnie Walker bottles, but still....
absolutely loved it....F Pu-lousy
Taking a government funded world vacation while the rest of government is shut down and not receiving paychecks was pretty brazen anyway. Perhaps that’s why I hadn’t heard a word of it in the media until Trump shut the whole thing down.
The money quote.
Well, if these fools ever again try to get selfies with US Service members, they had better hope they pick the 1 in 20 that supports Dems or they will get the Hillary treatment.
Ike would have. He ordered operation wetback after all.
The letter was terrific and the timing of its delivery magnificent. Enjoy Trump’s presidency, chillun, we’ll never see that likes of him in the WH again.
It will be interesting on Monday when layoffs can commence.
Question is, will Pelosi and the Democrats come back to the table? Trump has his game plan and he is executing it to perfection.
Pure joy...pure gold.
Trump’s move further weakens Pelosi. Throws more blood in the water for AOC and the Radical Young Turks. He is going to have them at each others throats by 2020.
I am sure Nanzi Progressive-losi must have been upset and given she is in the mid to advanced stages of Alzheimer’s Disease (I watched my brother in law digress from about where she is now (he was at her stage about two years ago). I took him to the VA over the past 9 days because between Thanksgiving and New Years he literally lost his memory, is stooped forward, pisses himself, and is just about gone. All I can say is life is cure and Nancy was probably voted into the Speaker’s Role as parting gift by the DNC since it the best they have for her long service. That said, I can’t wait until she and RGB are both gone - they have had bountiful lives.
Pelosi’s riposte would be the fund the trip herself, playing the martyr’s role. I suspect she’s too cheap to do it.
Inspiring this old graphic:
It's funny. Yesterday the #nevertrump concern trolls were pontificating that "this childish action doesn't make Trump look good."
All I could think was, "In what world does this make President Trump look bad to anyone other than partisan Democrats?"
Frankly, one can only hope for followup moves such as ordering only bread, water, and mac'n'cheese to be served to Democratic legislators who visit the White House. That would be comedy gold!
