Europe's patience with Iran wears thin, tiptoes toward Trump

BRUSSELS/PARIS - In Tehran on Jan. 8 during a meeting with European envoys, Iranian officials abruptly stood up, walked out and slammed the door in an extraordinary break with protocol.

The next day, the European Union imposed its first sanctions on Iran since world powers agreed the 2015 Vienna nuclear arms control deal with Tehran.

The sanctions were largely symbolic but the stormy meeting encapsulated the unexpected shift in European diplomacy since the end of last year. Smaller, more dovish EU countries have joined France and Britain in a harder stance on Tehran, including considering new economic sanctions, diplomats say.

Those could include asset freezes and travel bans on Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and Iranians developing the Islamic Republic’s ballistic missile program, three diplomats said.

The new approach moves Europe closer to U.S. President Donald Trump’s policy of isolating Iran with tough sanctions even though European governments still support the 2015 Vienna deal from which he withdrew in May.

Although there are diverging views in Europe, the shift could have consequences for President Hassan Rouhani’s government as it looks to European capitals to salvage that deal.

A U.S. State Department official said there was now “a growing international consensus” on the range of Iranian threats.

“The U.S. welcomes Europe’s efforts to counter Iranian terrorism on European soil, its missile launches, human rights abuses, and other threats,” the official said.

Hey, we aren’t asking anything unreasonable. Just give us the nuclear bomb, Mohammed.

It isn’t just sentiment. A simple range ring plot of what Iran can hit with their continuing missile development and what they can’t is very informative.

This was what Nancy wanted to make that stop in Brussels, where she was going to meet with NATO heads and EU reps...she wants to preserve Obama’s treasonous protection of Iran.

Maybe Macron’s new EU Army can deal with it.

Wasn’t the Ayatolah Khomenie (sp?) in exile inside France. Between the leadership of France and Carter, they are responsible for the Iran we have today. Shah bad! Ayatolah good... As if!

S for brains both entities that set this up.

Now we have to clean up another spill on isle 6. Same with N. K. and Carter’s toothy smile at the agreement to let the north continue to develop nukes.

The Iranians are lobbing ballistic missiles into Riyadh from Yemen, where the Saudis are helping the incumbent government, and the Iranians are helping the Houthi rebels. You gotta wonder how Iran would react if the Saudis started firing ballistic missiles at Tehran from Yemen.

So the Frenchies and Eurogeeks finally discover that they are dealing with moral savages.

Shouldn’t have taken Trump to bring them about, but it did.

“This was what Nancy wanted to make that stop in Brussels, where she was going to meet with NATO heads and EU reps...she wants to preserve Obama’s treasonous protection of Iran.”

The timing matched Davos, so I was thinking her bunch would make an appearance there - but what you’re saying makes perfect sense.

If I remember correctly, when this first happened, her office released this information, thinking it made the trip look more legitmate (since of course any move to undercut Trump is totally legitmate, right?) but then withdrew the statement and said it was because of a “pilot changeover.” This was an Air Force flight...they can refuel and change pilots in no time at all.

She obviously had meetings set up to present herself as the “real” president of the US, just as John Kerry did In Iran.

Trump stood firm with Iran. the EU tried to second guess us, as usual, superior humans that they are, encouraged in their dissent by American media and commies masquerading as politicians. And, once again, as usual, they’re now seeking to hide behind our petticoats and not feeling quite so superior. Welcome back to the cold, hard earth, EU. Try to listen more closely next time, eh?
