When there are 30 million on this side of it that shouldn’t be I restate my allegation, “...too late.” Once the 30 million are back on their side it may be a useful thing. In the meanwhile, the symbol, itself, is worthwhile.

Yes, the cameras watch them cross illegally and then ICE tries to find them. Of course under current law, after they have crossed, they can then be charged, and released onto US soil.
No thanks! Build the wall. Stop them at the border. Vet anyone wanting to claim asylum, but make them stay in Mexico until cleared. Anyone crossing illegally needs to be deported permanently.

As for the “polls” showing Americans don’t want the wall, blame Trump for the shutdown etc..
I took an online survey the other day and when I answered the first few questions too positively for Trump I got KICKED OUT
Waking up to the news today, an article in the Hill reports a few GOPe met with Pence yesterday and told him that Trump needs to end the shutdown. So not much has changed in DC, and Mitch didn’t grow a pair as you wished.
Pelosi won’t bring this up for a House vote because she has at least 40 who will support the Wall, else they will lose in 2020. Her goals are two-fold - keep her party in line to prevent Trump from having $ to build the Wall which will be used against him in 2020, and to prevent a vote where she would lose in her own House. The demokraps have their corp media/internet wing working around the clock framing the issue as a government shutdown, with no discussion of the national issue on the border.
The Wall is an important symbol for the reasons you state. Not too long ago the DC wisdom was that no politician in his right mind would run on anything but “comprehensive immigration reform”, code words for amnesty. Trump is the black swan, this will not fade as an issue in 2020. Yes, it is our Ft Sumter.
