The President said that we will never be a socialist country. I’m glad he said that but unfortunately we already are. Right?

We have been trading with China, massively, for the last generation and a half.

Every bit as communist, and a whole lot bigger...

And it makes a big subtle point. Deciding to be a friend to the USA was far better for Vietnam than being an enemy.

And frankly, I personally believe the Vietnamese are a huge bit, less worried about building up a rival empire.

For real. They are not, in my view, a rival.

They are however, a bit against Chinese power.

That is important, in my view.

Thanks.

That is (exactly) what I was thinking of.

I really like it here, but you nailed it.

Too bad we couldn’t do that sixty five years ago. Would have saved us a lot of time and energy.

I've believed for the longest time that the Vietnam conflict could have been avoided had circumstances been different decades earlier. Ho Chi Minh was working as a waiter at the Versailles Conference and tried to get his country's concerns have a place on the agenda. He got turned down every time. It was out of frustration with what he saw of western democracy at the conference that led to him adopting communism. Not as an ideology for its own sake however. To Minh and his associates it was merely the best vehicle they could afford toward driving out French occupation.

The Vietnam War in many ways is what our own Civil War might have looked like had Lincoln accepted offers of foreign military aid. It was very wise for ALL involved with such notions that the war remained our own in-house problem. Just so, in hindsight it would have been the wiser thing to have stayed neutral in regard to Vietnam. Except for the strategic matter of a country friendly with the Soviets, but I digress.

So much grief and suffering that could have been avoided has Wilson and others lent an ear to the Vietnamese following World War I. They practically guaranteed the bloodshed that would happen forty years later.

That being said, Trump seems poised to make the most of the opportunity to improve relations with the last two nations in the Far East with whom mistrust and bitterness lingers. And not only that, but to encourage them toward freedom neither has known in modern memory.

Interesting times indeed!

You left out one little factoid. Ho Chi Minh had been a member of Comintern since the Russian Revolution, and was one of the founding members of the French Communist Party. He was always loyal to Moscow.

You are so correct in your comments. They are communist.

The hardliners being Mao and Ho Chi Minh modeled their communism after Stalin’s harsh rule and strict adherence to the cruelest of types of socialism and enforcement of such.

Those under Mao and Uncle Ho realized that crap just did not work and moved to more capitalist economies while maintaining the communist image in government control. As a result both China and Vietnam have thriving economies. What we have here is more proof socialism doesn’t work. Just don’t tell AOC.

Sadly, if the dems had not undercut the funding of the South Vietnamese, their economy would likely have been as good as it is today.

The impression we left on the South stuck and Americans (and our money) is quite welcome in Vietnam.
