Instructions for constructing a working zip gun using a couple of dollars in parts available from any hardware store have been readily available since the 1940s.
If I had no other access to guns, I would make and fire a zip gun made out of a metal pipe long before I would consider firing a gun printed out of plastic.
I suspect a good chemist would have better luck.
Something like a center fire primer would be another adventure.
I have made my own ammunition for a couple of decades. I have made it from high quality supplies I have purchased. Making my own has cut the cost of each projectile from about a dollar a round to something between 5 and 15 cents a round (depending on when I purchased the raw materials).
I hope in this era of zip gun cum printed firearms we are still able to obtain working projectiles or the parts to make our own. I don't have a lifetime supply of raw materials, and quality low smoke (smokeless?) gunpowder has a limited shelf life.
Yes, but it lasts longer than many people think if you store it properly. And I've shot some really old ammo too. It gets hotter with age.
With cast lead bullets I can reload my 30-30 ammo for about $.12 to $.15 per round. 170 grain lead bullet is still very lethal cartridge. With a gas check you can shoot it pretty fast without leading the barrel. I have enough powder, primers and lead to last me quite a while.
If you buy Hornady FTX bullets, it increases the effective range a lot. Not on the category of a 30-06 cartridge, but not shabby.
They are real effective short range weapons, but considered antique by some.
I know a motivated & competent individual (a Marine, programmer, & CNC hobbyist) who enthusiastically intended to “print” the DD Liberator.
Went so badly he gave up.
While the right to freely publish & acquire plans to make/print a gun is very important, the state of the art is not adequate to meaningfully act on; goal is to preserve that right for when it is.
The whole leftist frenzy over "printed" guns just illustrates how totally ignorant liberals are, regarding firearms. Your average progressive can't tell an AR15 from a black plastic 'super-soaker', let alone tell you the difference between a magazine and a clip, a barrel and a cylinder, or blow-back and gas operation. Because they have no clue how firearms are constructed and operate, they assume nobody else does either. Hence their terror at the thought of just hitting the 'return' key, in order to produce a working weapon.
What the clueless progressive @ss-clowns don't realize (because they 'project' their abysmal ignorance on the rest of the population), is that any reasonably intelligent American can pick up enough material at an ordinary hardware store to build a gun. And it's been that way for generations...
