Border-Security Funding Negotiations Stall as Shutdown Looms
Wall Street Journal ^ | February 10, 2019 | Kate Davidson, Kristina Peterson and Ken Thomas

Negotiations over a bipartisan deal for border-security funding have broken down, aides familiar with the talks and other officials said Sunday, increasing the likelihood of another government shutdown at the end of the week.

...

The talks this weekend snagged over the issue of how many detention beds would be provided at the border for housing people detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials. Democrats have been seeking to limit the number of ICE detention beds in exchange for meeting GOP demands to build more physical barriers along the border. Republicans, however, wanted exceptions to the limits.

Democrats had proposed establishing a new limit on detention beds used by ICE officials when apprehending people for violations within the U.S., known as interior enforcement. Those beds would be capped at 16,500, as part of an existing overall cap of 40,520 beds funded in the fiscal year 2018 spending bill.

The idea is the limit would force the government to prioritize the detention of violent criminals, rather than people who had overstayed their visas. Republicans objected, wanting to exclude violent criminals from that cap. Democrats said the exclusion would undermine their objective.

Without an agreement on ICE beds, talks on funding levels and physical barriers stalled. It wasn’t clear when the discussions would resume, the aide said. “We’ve got some problems with the Democrats dealing with ICE, that is detaining criminals that come into the U.S.,” Mr. Shelby said. “They want a cap on them, we don’t want a cap on that.”

This is absurd. We should detain and deport all the illegal aliens that we catch, not subject to some arbitrary cap. What's next, a cap on the number of people in prison, regardless of how many criminals there are?

deadline is in five days

Sooo here comes the stupid from the proglibs.

They never wanted to negotiate, they never will want to negotiate.

Shut it down, shut it down hard.

Do not provide any additional information, just deploy military forces on an international security issue at the border and let them try to figure out what is going on.

Don’t name it, don’t even acknowledge that any operation exists.

It is just normal military day-to-day operations.

“Deadline is in 5 days”

Publicly issue warning orders to the Airborne Divisions to prepare to move to the border on Tuesday. Watch the left freak out...

Democrats said the exclusion would undermine their objective.

Let's see, what could that "objective" be? To make the D party the same as the government, like the old PRI in Mexico? They taught that in their schools, "partido gobierno."

Catch and release has been flooding the country and they want it to keep flooding the country.

That's the objective.
If you don't have the facilities to detain them, and you can't send them back, they will be released into our country to go wherever they want.
And they will have years to come up with a new American identity. - Tom

The VeeP says the wall will be built one way or another. I take him at his word. To hell with the talks, just build the dam wall.

That “objective” is the destruction of the bond
between the President and his base. It’s that simple,
if they can do that they have control.

The partial shutdowns are good. Even if there is little in terms of money saved, making non-essential programs less efficient is a benefit to the public when we are talking about predatory and useless agencies. Much of the “resistance” is actively working against Trump at these agencies. So we can have partial shutdowns periodically without harming the economy and potentially benefitting the public.

Trump will find legal sources of money to fund the wall. Administrative costs and logistics to deploy the wall can probably be funded and carried out by the military. This will reduce the overall coat, so that the most fungible money can be used on the physical structure and installation.

We can simply say the new shutdown is not about the wall. It’s about how many beds are needed for detention. We can argue that a lack of detention beds will needlessly separate immigrant children from their parents. Call it the “Pelosi Shutdown”.

The Wall discussion has been bypassed. Now the Dems will get the blame for the shutdown. Who can be against the GOP plan of a larger budget for beds? Only liberals who don’t want their voting block detained.

This will be a far easier win for Trump to sell to the American people.

That headline could have well been used on January 22, 2019!
