Lincoln's Birthday: February 12
02.12.19 | chickensoup

Today is Lincoln's Birthday February 12. Up until the 80's it was celebrated in schools. It wasn't a day off, but instead was a day to look at our history, wear construction stovepipe hats and discuss a tough time in our society's past.

February was a great month when I was growing up:

First Lincoln's Birthday February 12 which was not a day off but all the bakeries had log shaped cakes YUM

Second was Valentine's Day, February 14 when Grandmother served Winter strawberry short cake with heart shaped shortbread and strawberries and real whipped cream. We traded valentines and candy too.

Third was Washington's Birthday February 22 which was a day off. and every bakery sold and every dinner table held a cherry pie to be topped with ice cream!

More traditions lost.

Yeah I remember those days as well. I lived in upstate New York on a farm and went to a rural school. Cold. But great sledding.

Lincoln’s Birthday was always a day off for us.

Upper NYstate certainly is cold.

Those were good times. Sorry my grandchildren were born in such different times.

Really I was pretty sure we had school, perhaps they gave two days off in Feb for both the birthdays?

“Grandmother served Winter strawberry short cake with heart shaped shortbread and strawberries and real whipped cream. “

Sounds fun.

Did you do that for your kids and/or grand kids (if you’re that old) too?

Different states could have been different. I was in California and we got both off.

Two days off, real close. It was great.

That’s why they made Presidents’ Day. There were two holidays. They took on and made MLK day and merged the two birthdays in to President’s Day.

The presidents are Lincoln and Washington.

I did all three for my children each year.

We served seasonal and holiday foods all the time from salmon and peas on the fourth to Apple pie supper in October.

Years ago I posted the list here. Perhaps I will try to find it again..

Yes and they moved the holiday to a weekend.

There is something to having a holiday be on its date. It is a part of tradition versus convenience

I do remember that. But vaguely.

They changed the holidays to either Monday or Friday so people could have three day weekends.

It does detract from the reason for the holiday.

I shall never forget Washington’s Birthday 1956. I was 10 and we got up early to go to the Washington’s Birthday sales. I got a TV set for my room for ONE DOLLAR. That was great.

Now recognition of all presidents is lumped together into one day.

And the big events of the day are Presidents Day sales at car dealers, furniture stores and discount mattress peddlers.

But Michael King Jr. (MLK Jr.’s real birth name and legal name) gets a full legal holiday because he is Oh-so much more important than all the presidents lumped together.

/s

IMHO MLK Jr. doesn’t amount to a pimple on the butt of Gerorge Washinton’s horse.

It is disgusting that all presidents are honored with a day.

Many do not deserve honoring.

Few are of the caliber of Washington.

The honoring was back then, a remembering of the history.

that has been lost.

It was a day off when I was a kid. Although it was usually rolled into our winter vacation.

Perhaps that is why I do not remember it as a day off,I was already off?

Some people still say that about me.

My Grandma always made cherry pie.
Never made the connection until now.
Her parents were both immigrants from Switzerland.
Thanks for the memories.

Will be making pie on the 22nd.
