In 2016, critics of Trump warned his Christians supporters that as president he would revert to his secularist New York roots. He hasnt. The confidence the religious right placed in him has been largely vindicated. He has turned out to be the most reliable defender of religious freedom since Ronald Reagan.
Barack Obama had spent his presidency marginalizing Christians in his quest to fundamentally transform the country. Had Hillary won, she would have intensified that assault. Trump has given Christians some breathing room in the culture war, as evident in his remarks during last weeks National Prayer Breakfast. He made a point of defending the Vice Presidents wife, Karen Pence, who has been attacked for simply teaching at a Christian school blacklisted by the LGBT movement.
Trump also spoke strongly in defense of the pro-life movement. All children, born and unborn, are made in the holy image of God. Every life is sacred and every soul is a precious gift from heaven, he said. I will never let you down. I can say that.
...
Trump shows far more reverence for the basic tenets of Judeo-Christian culture than those who have cast him as the callous, amoral plutocrat. His common sense and patriotism lead him to show a respect for Americas theistic traditions and he recognizes that Americas decline is tied to straying from them. He speaks about God in an uncomplicated manner, with far less hedging than modern churchmen. To Trump, it is obvious that rights come not from government but from God. The whole secularist project, consequently, makes no sense to him and he has no qualms about letting Christians live on their own terms without government harassment.

Yes.
He really has changed from the NY Democrat liberal moderate he was.
Remember, Trump was the guy who helped Al Sharpton get his start.
Gorsuch and Kavanaugh alone would have justified the support of the Religious right - nevermind the 30 Appeals Court judges seated in the first two years.
If you want to SURVIVE in business in NYC, no less THRIVE, you can either keep quiet about politics or lean at least slightly left even if pretending.
Then when you yield REAL power, you show your true colors.
I sat through several Investment Banking interviews with just a smile on my face as a leftist comment was made.
THEN when I was hired and the bosses were 2 white conservative men, I let my opinions fly.
It was still 40 against 2 but those 40 were not the 2 bosses and I wasn’t concerned with being their friend.
NO ONE knows what Trump thought in his heart during those years.
One can talk big about dignity and being true to yourself, but having a roof and food are good things.
I think that maybe Donald Trump figured out the time for straddling the fence has passed.
Remember this very argument here on FR in 2015 and early 2016?
I know many people that pray for him everyday. Some multiple times a day.
Theres also the fact that the Dems have moved WAY left over time, combined with the tendency of most individuals to become more conservative as they get older. Even Reagan started out as a Dem.
+1
I am among them.
