Democrats vilify the Trump tax cuts for generating smaller refunds
The Washington Examiner ^ | February 12, 2019 | by Colin Wilhelm

Democrats see early statistics showing declining refunds this tax filing season as an opportunity to attack the 2017 Republican tax overhaul as a giveaway to the rich at the expense of the middle class.

The tax cuts lowered the amount withheld from each paycheck for most taxpayers, cutting their taxes but also raising the possibility that, when they file their taxes, their refund will be smaller.

Even though they may be paying less taxes overall, taxpayers might resent getting a smaller lump refund - or having to pay a larger bill to tax collectors.

The effect of those tax cuts on the middle class figures to be a major point of litigation in 2020 campaigns.

“The average tax refund is down about $170 compared to last year,” Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., a candidate for president, tweeted Monday. “Let’s call the President’s tax cut what it is: a middle-class tax hike to line the pockets of already wealthy corporations and the 1%.”

Harris has said she would seek to roll back the tax cuts for those making more than $100,000 per year if elected president.

“I do think there’s confusion, and because of the government shutdown and because of the change in the tax laws there’s a lot of nervousness around the tax season,” said Sen. Rob Portman R-Ohio, a senior member of the the Senate Finance Committee. “I’m told confidently by Treasury everything is going to be OK, everything’s going to work, but I do think there is some understandable concern.”

Idiots all. Refund amounts have nothing to do with total tax liability. 80% of taxpayers owe less, 10% the same, and 5% saw their tax liability go down in 2018 according to the WaPo. Portman can't even explain this fundamental conservative concept that lower taxes are good, grow the economy, and lead to more federal tax receipts.

We have to pay a small amount this year. Would far rather have to send in than let the Feds hold my money, interest free, until I file for my refund.

My wife and I made more, paid less taxes and got a bigger return. I can live with that.

Smaller refunds means people are paying taxes more accurately, not more taxes.

I see the public schools have served the government well. Must be new math in all 57 states.

I haven’t gotten a refund in years.

I don’t believe in giving the Government an interest-free loan.

Democrats are annoyed that the feds are not holding onto as much of our money (interest-free) until they decide we can have the overage returned to us sometime in the next fiscal year. (For those who didn’t follow the article, most folks are not only paying less in taxes, they are having less withheld, so the increased cash in their pockets shows up continually during the year, not in as big a lump sum as it might have in previous refunds).

If someone needs the government to save money for them in the form of over paying taxes just to get a bigger refund, that someone is as dumb as a box of rocks.

Smaller refunds means people kept more of their money throughout the year instead of getting it back at the end of the year.

Democrat thinking...

$50 more take home each payday = $1,300

$200 less refund

Net loss to taxpayer...

Bwa ha ha ha ha...

Nothing is new under the sun.

For decades the ill-informed taxpayers have fooled themselves into believing a tax refund is money the government gave to them.

And unfortunately, almost all of these ill-informed taxpayers are regular voters.

Tax refunds have ZERO to do with taxes paid. It has everything to do with withholding amounts. I heard a CBS news reader gasp when this was announced, what an idiot.

Net loss to taxpayer...

The kind of people who think this are the sort who will vote Democrat no matter what. These are the people who believe that if they get a refund they don't pay taxes.
