Republican leader says U.S. Senate will vote on Green New Deal

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell said on Tuesday that the U.S. Senate will vote on a “Green New Deal” introduced by Democrats that seeks to eliminate U.S. greenhouse gas emissions within a decade.

“I’ve noted with great interest the Green New Deal, and we’re going to be voting on that in the Senate, give everybody an opportunity to go on record and see how they feel about the Green New Deal,” McConnell said.

The document introduced last week marked the first formal attempt by lawmakers to define legislation to create big government-led investments in clean energy and infrastructure to transition the U.S. economy away from fossil fuels.

Republicans have been quick to criticize the initiative, unveiled by rising political star Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Edward Markey.

The administration of President Donald Trump does not believe action on climate change is necessary and is focused on increasing production of oil, gas and coal on federal and private land.

The plan outlines some of the most aggressive climate goals ever put forward by Democratic lawmakers and clashes dramatically with the Trump administration’s efforts to advance domestic oil, gas and coal production by rolling back environmental protections.

“The first question Republicans should answer is what is their answer on climate change, what are they going to put forward,” Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said.

Well, a vote will put the Democrats on the record. Do they favor this massive overreach to fight “climate change”, and overhaul society to give jobs to the jobless, get rid of cows, etc.??? Let’s vote, sounds good to me.

I like the spirit, but won’t it be filibustered?

Screw the turtle like he has been screwing us. He is the most dishonest leader the senate has ever seen, and weak beyond belief. He says one thing while pulling the levers behind the scenes to do just the opposite. The wall being a key example.

What a fraud. How about a vote on the wall?

GOP is using green new deal as a shiny object to distract conservatives and Trump voters from GOPs refusal to deliver on the issues tha got Trump elected

Who cares about putting Dems on the spot? It’s the GOP - led by Mitch - who are giving us open borders. Mitch wants to distract you. Don’t fall for it

No Chuck, the Republicans don’t have to offer up a damned thing.

It’s you and YOUR idiots who put this on the table. It’s up to YOU to defend it

No this is a moving the goal posts moment. It’s so far out there that lesser “deals” will seem reasonable in comparison.

And they will be proud to do so! Their constituency wants a Great New Deal. They want unicorn-powered trains. And those pesky details? Taxing the rich will take care of that.

Yes let’s talk about green new deal so we forget that Mitch and GOPee sold out the wall again. Mitch thinks the base can be played, and he may be right

Yup. You nailed it. We'll get stuck with a big government jobs program and Medicare for All, and think we struck a good compromise because we got to keep hamburgers and airplanes.

We knew where reid stood, and he continually told us. mcconnel lies to our face and does just the opposite. That makes turtle by far more dishonest then reid. IMHO.

Stupid show vote. Hell with McTurtle! He should be voting on Judicial Nominees instead of wasting time. He also just betrayed the President, by getting a group of senators together and telling the President to accept the crappy wall funding.

I think we are all losing sight of what we can do and work on that -approving and appointing judges. While Mitch and his minions play games down there, I don’t see new conservative judges filling slots on the judiciary.

Love it. Get the Dems on record they plan to do away with air travel and want a 70% tax bracket. Can’t wait for the next election.
