Russia's plan to disconnect from Internet raises Great Firewall fears

Russia is going to temporarily unplug from the internet as part of what the country is calling a planned experiment.

According to a report from Russian news site RBC, the planned disconnection is intended to examine whether the country run by Vladimir Putin is prepared for a draft law that mandates a "sovereign" internet.

ZDNet reports that a draft of the law required that Russian internet service providers must ensure the independence of the Russian internet space (Runet) in the case of foreign aggression to disconnect the country from the rest of the internet.

The legislation's goal is to prevent any aggression from the U.S., which has listed Russia as a major source of cybersecurity attacks...some observers told the British publication that they believe the move is another step toward duplicating China's Great Firewall – which restricts access of that country's internet users to content approved by the communist government – in Russia.

Russia's telecom watchdog, Roskomnazor, will inspect traffic to block prohibited content and make sure that traffic between Russian internet users is not re-routed to servers outside of the country, according to ZDNet.

In 2017, Russian officials said they wanted to route 95 percent of all internet traffic locally by 2020, ZDNet added.

There’s always someone who ‘fears’, regardless of topic.

Only the USA wants open borders and no restrictions from outside enemies. Why do other countries want walls? /s

There are three electrical grids in the Lower 48 states: the Eastern Interconnection, the Western Interconnection — and Texas. I’d like to think that self-sufficiency is the reason for Putin’s move as it is in Texas, but I doubt that’s the case.

We should dredge up their cables and disable their satellite feeds during the ‘experiment’. Sorta the internet version of changing the locks while the problem tenants are out of town.

That would be a good idea, but please wait until I get that $60 that Crown Prince Gatagimme of Nigeria promised to send me.

Got love sovereignty. We could learn something from Vlad here. Not block the Internet but block any invasions. Seems there is one going on now that the dhimmicrats want and repubes just throw up their hands and slyly wink to the US Chamber of Commerce.

Honestly speaking, any country that does not have a backup system for Domain Name Service(DNS) resolution where a URL is translated it to an IP address is asking to be somebody else’s bitch.

Just $60?

That’s as bad as the girl who wanted me to marry her so she could sell the 11 barrels of crude oil stored in a warehouse in NYC.

The word “fear” in a headline is a red flag that the author is a manipulative bastard engaged in deliberate deception.

Let me know when they do. I manage 6 websites; I can maybe take a day off or two knowing the Russians aren’t trying hack into or spam one of the sites.

Are they at war with Eastasia again?
Or is it Eurasia this time?
