Topping (or rather, bottoming) the list with the most miserable living situation of all? Mendota, CA.

Left out of the San Francisco Chronicle article about Mendota

How brutal murders and fear kept a town silent. MS-13 is like no other gang

Despite its international reputation for hacking up victims with machetes – sometimes brazenly leaving the bloodied, mangled corpses in the open – the street gang MS-13 slipped into Mendota relatively unnoticed.

Few people outside the rural town in California’s Central Valley knew MS-13 had infiltrated the area at least a decade ago.

MS-13 carved out a reign of terror resulting in at least 14 brutal murders in and around Mendota from 2015 to 2017. There was little or no media coverage on some of the murders, some of which had been initially labeled as suspicious deaths.

Makaha was deemed the worst place to reside in the state due to its high cost of living and low affordability.

Nobody goes to Makaha anymore, it's too crowded.

Or...Makaha must be a terrible place, that's why people pay a lot of money to live there.

Seriously, the cost of living shouldn't be a factor. People pay lots of money to live in the best places and people pay very little money to live in the "worst" places.

It’s “bad” because the poor cannot afford to live there, and the residents of such exclusionary places feel so overwhelmed with guilt that it is an unpleasant place to be, unless and until they strip their homes and properties of value and bring in more “economic diversity”. Hollywood stars do it all the time.... right?

the street gang MS-13 slipped into Mendota relatively unnoticed.

They first "visit" to sell drugs, network and set up prostitution, making connections to move in. Before you know it they are there. They also seem to just appear overnight where there are pockets of people from Central America living in different communities. The Central Americans that are workers also have family members that are deadbeats, druggies, gang members.

By the time ordinary people realize they are a problem in an area they already control whatever they want.

Looks like the worst area is Golden Gate Park, maybe because there are no households there.

Well, the homeless like parks. Maybe some San Franciscans can bring us up to speed on the Golden Gate park.

I’d heard of it but never looked it up.

Looks like it has a Burger King, an Dollar General and a Latino Market. I also saw a couple of gas stations.

Also a Family Dollar and a McDonald’s.

Still, it looks better than the small Kansas town I was in a few years ago, LOL.

Went there around late 90s, husband wanted to look at a Slideback he saw advertised, about halfway between I 5 and 99 somewhere around chowchilla, drove through it and right back out never even stopped. It was a hell hole then so can imagine now.

Misleading. Here in Hawaii, Makaha & Waianae are totally local welfare towns, the closest thing to ghetto in Hawaii, but unique.

It bills it’s self as the cantelope capital of the world. But it’s also out in bfe. Waaay off the beaten path. But it’s right on I5, so that makes the town prime for illegal activity.
