Drinking two diet drinks a day increases your chance of heart attack or stroke, groups say

More bad news for diet soda lovers: Drinking two or more of any kind of artificially sweetened drinks a day is linked to an increased risk of clot-based strokes, heart attacks and early death in women over 50, according to a new study by the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association.

The risks were highest for women with no history of heart disease or diabetes and women who were obese or African-American.

Previous research has shown a link between diet beverages and stroke, dementia , Type 2 diabetes , obesity and metabolic syndrome, which can lead to heart disease and diabetes.

"This is another confirmatory study showing a relationship between artificially sweetened beverages and vascular risks. While we cannot show causation, this is a yellow flag to pay attention to these findings," said American Academy of Neurology President Dr. Ralph Sacco, who was not involved in the latest study.

"What is it about these diet drinks?" asked lead study author Yasmin Mossavar-Rahmani, an associate professor of clinical epidemiology and population health at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, New York. "Is it something about the sweeteners? Are they doing something to our gut health and metabolism? These are questions we need answered."

So, the magic number is to drink THREE glasses a day to reduce this risk?

Drink a shot of liquor instead. It would keep your veins in shape to live a long life. One shot only of course.

Everything has become politicized.

Strictly a water drinker here. Well, maybe two cups of coffee a week.

Regular soda drinks have way too much sugar. Diet drinks, well... read the article.

Or, overweight people with heat problems drink diet soda. Could be that too.

“While we cannot show causation.......”

BINGO, this study is bunk. Maybe fatter people who are already prone to heart diseases & stroke & diabetes are more likely to drink Diet Soda.

After all their victories against smoking, the health Nazis need a new target to stay employed. Until recently cigarettes didn’t have a safer diet equivalent. So they have to invent bad stuff about diet soda.

I know my body lets me know I put garbage into it anytime I drink a ‘soft’ drink.

Mexican Coca Cola seems to be the only exception (I think they use cane sugar) but that stuff is really high in calories....

What the heck is wrong with just good old WATER?!?!

I only occasionally have diet sodas. My husband has lately been drinking coke. I had some kind of virus & after I woke up from that virus induced zombie sleep I was soooo thirsty. I poured a small cup of coke & it was the most amazingly refreshing thing in the world!

I have not drank sweet drinks of any kind for 40 years.

Water or beer — that is it!

no diet drinks.

But don’t drink fruit juices and blends-—high carbohydrates and sugars.

Of course no beer, wine or alcoholic drinks and hard cider or fruit style alcohol blends.

Stay off of too much milk. Fat and hormones and other drawbacks. A little soy or almond drink maybe. A little.

And finally watch the water-—too much causes “intoxication” as system is overwhelmed by the water.

Sounds like we are doomed again.

I haven't drank anything but diet coke and aspartame loaded coffee with pure cream for 25 years, virtually no water and I turned 80 last year.

It has no taste. I have well water. It is clean and pure, but it does not inspire me to drink it in large quantities without something added to it like coffee or, yes, artificial stuff like Propel mix.

On the other hand, if your water comes from your city or town, chances are the water does have a taste. A gross one.
