DeWine supports gas tax hike to raise highway cash -- the increase could be big
The Columbus Dispatch ^ | February 19, 2019 | Jim Siegel and Randy Ludlow

Gov. Mike DeWine said Tuesday that he will propose an increase in the gasoline tax — and it could be a sizable one — to fix and improve Ohio’s crumbling roads and bridges.

The first-year Republican would not reveal the size of the proposed hike.

DeWine told reporters the recommended increase would maintain the status quo of highway maintenance and some major projects. That would require another $600 million per year, or an additional 14 cents a gallon — a 50 percent increase in the 28-cent tax — based on figures from the Department of Transportation.

The elevation will be proposed in the two-year state transportation budget he plans to submit Thursday to the House of Representatives, DeWine said at the Ohio Associated Press biennial legislative preview session.

Ohio’s fuel tax has not been increased since 2005. Each one-cent increase would generate $67 million, with the state keeping 60 percent and 40 percent going to local governments. So the overall take on a 14-cent increase would be $1 billion.

“You have to have a gas tax increase, there’s no doubt,” DeWine said. “The day of reckoning is finally here and we have an obligation to face that.”

Raising more money is vital to both ensuring the safety of Ohio’s roadways and bridges and preserving the infrastructure needed to feed the economy, he said.

The state issued $2.1 billion in construction contracts this year, and that number is set to drop to $1.5 billion next year with no new revenue. That would fall short of the $1 billion per year that Transportation Director Jack Marchbanks said the state needs to provide optimal funding for major road construction, safety projects and maintenance.

Rino. Ok as long as he’s in the Governors mansion instead of the senate. Need I say more?

A gas tax is the fairest way to pay for highways.

Gas taxes should not be increased for road or highway repair until all *non* road or highway repair expenses from the gas tax funds are ended.

As far as any government entity is involved, nothing is equitable.

Are any politicians paying attention to what is happening in France? Nah, they know better and know what is the best for the peasants.

The problem is...they take that money and do other things with it...Like give to illegals....

Like give to citizens that are lying and cheating.

Every smart American knows it....They lie and they cheat...and want people to pay.

Izzat right?

You reckon it's those 4,000 lb cars ruining the roads, not those 80,000 lb trucks?

Clue: not true.

Get a horse. Less wear and tear on the roads, and its manure can be used as fertilizer. Love recycling.

Only if 100% of the current gas tax has been spent on road maintenance for the last 5 years in a row. Any missing funds stolen for other pet projects must be returned in full FIRST.

Everytime the cookie jar is down to crumbs, politicians suddenly remember the roads and bridges they have refused to fix for the last twenty years and scream gas tax.

Bingo! No more road-tax money for bike paths or joggling trails!

Well, don’t trucks buy gas or diesel fuel, and pay those taxes just as cars do?

How many fookin retards live here (on FR)?

The elected public servant has a plan to raise taxes.

It is a secret. But he says it will solve everything.
*****
Fast forward. State issued $2B+ this year, will issue $1.5B next year....but it will fall short of the $1B required.

Does someone need an abacus or some pebbles or something to count? Mebbe the writer is a bloomin idiot (likely)?

I may be a knuckledragger, but if I need one billion dollars and I get one and a half, I don’t think I’ll be short.

How about a few thousand yellow vests surround the mansion and demand the ‘people’s servant’ doesn’t have ‘secret’ taxes up his sleeve?

Those trucks pay a lot more in other taxes, too.
