New York driver allegedly plows into family of 8, killing mom after asked to stop smoking

A New York man allegedly mowed down a family of eight, including a baby and five children, outside a 7-Eleven store on Wednesday, killing a 32-year-old mother after the father asked the driver to stop smoking, a report said.

Jason Mendez, 35, hit all eight members of the family following an argument he had with the father who had allegedly asked him not to blow cigarette smoke around his children, WCBS-TV reported.

Mendez, of Washingtonville, got into his car and smashed into the Rockland County convenience store before he reversed the vehicle and plowed forward again, striking the family a second time, police said. A mangled baby carriage remained at the scene as witness told WNBC-TV they saw a woman lying on the ground injured and heard a baby crying.

All eight family members were hospitalized. The mother was later pronounced dead. The 35-year-old father and six children, ranging from two to 10 years old, were treated for non-life threatening injuries, WABC-TV reported. Police have yet to release the family’s identity.

Really heavy on the "allegeds" in this story. Exited with a knife? Didn't finish all of them off? Pleaded not guilty at his arraignment? We live in a world gone completely mad.

Mendez. That’s a name of British origin I think.

“Mendez” has a certain south-of-the-border flavor to it. One is inclined to be curious as to Senor Mendez’s citizenship and immigration status.

I guess maybe dad will respect the damage cars can do a bit more, at least relative to second hand smoke.

What an inane and moronic remark. I’m holding back.

According to a Telemundo report, the perp has a San Antonio, TX address. Wonder what he was doing up here?

Sorry, but I’m sick of nannies. He could have just walked away from the guy, as far as I can tell.

You sound like you're excusing this monster for attempting to murder an entire family over being requested to not blow smoke on kids. Are you for real?

His conscious will bother him for the rest of his life. If he doesn’t get the death penalty he will wish he had it because the rest of the prison population will be merciless.

Some nicotine addicts get extremely violent when their drug habit is challenged in any way.

One could be pardoned, I think, for suggesting perhaps that cannabis should be legalized and tobacco should be outlawed.

Part of protecting a family is NOT trying to be a hero for no damn reason, other than having some issue with cigarette smoke. After all, we don’t live in Iceland or something.

Like most here, I’ve faced many similar situations (especially where I live), and like most here simply walked away. It’s not that hard and it is VERY DANGEROUS to take on others for no reason.

I am very careful to keep my tongue in check when out & about because there is so much rage in society today.

In traffic I can (& do) use words which would make anyone blush, but my windows are up I keep my hands away from the horn, & a smile on my face

99.9% of those I cross paths with would never even dream of acting out. But you never know who is part of the 0.01%

It is never a good idea to confront strangers in a public setting
Make no mistake-I AM NOT saying the parents brought it on themselves
It’s just not something I would do because you never know who the crazies are and with my luck-I’d piss off a crazy

Not really. Have to have a conscience to have it bother you. Anyone who mows down an entire family because of a “don’t blow smoke at my kids” request is incapable of living amongst the civilized population. The dude is evil

The father asked the guy to not blow smoke on his kids. That is hardly "taking him on". You sound like you're excusing the maniac for attempting to murder a family.

“It is never a good idea to confront strangers in a public setting. Make no mistake-I AM NOT saying the parents brought it on themselves.”

Of course you’re not, and neither was I, from what we know from the article. It’s not like dad said “I dare you to run my family over.” Our point is very simple, it was AVOIDABLE.

When I unexpectedly brake hard on the freeway, I always either pump the pedal or turn on my flashers, so I don’t get rear-ended. Am required to take those steps? No. If I’m rear-ended, is it my fault if I don’t take those steps? Nope, not at all. Could I have avoided the accident by taking some easy steps? Yep, almost certainly, as I’ve never been rear-ended.

Obviously I’m not ‘excusing’ him for what he did, but I am saying that dad (apparently) had easy options that DID NOT involve setting the guy off - and anyone can be set off, and dad should have known it, especially when you look at the guy’s picture.
