Climate change putting Gullah communities at risk
NBC Local ^ | February 21, 2019 | by Brie Jackson

The Gullah people are descendants of enslaved Africans and are known for their rich history and unique Creole language.

But rising seas and estuaries, along with stronger coastal storms linked to climate change, are putting their communities at risk.

In Washington, lawmakers are holding a series of hearings into the threat.

“It is of great concern and grave concern to us,” said Queen Quet, Chieftess and Head-of-State of the Gullah/Geechee Nation. “We've seen those seafoods changing. We've seen less in certain stocks. We've seen where the catfish no longer flow.”

Coastal communities are home to these descendants of slaves, housing the rich history of the Gullah people.

"They have a rich history. And it's along those low lying areas as the sea level comes up they have a way of eroding that history and burying that history under the ocean,” said Rep. Donald McEachin (D-Va.).

Congressman McEachin is a member of the newly formed Select Committee on the Climate Crisis -- a group of House Democrats making climate change a top priority.

“It’s a problem that needs to be addressed now,” he stated.

This is a boilerplate article. We’ve all seen similar stories.

(Fill in the blank) people or location, will be affected by climate change. (Fill in the blank) residents have already noticed (fill in the blank) changes in their area. Local residents of (fill in the blank) are concerned about more such impacts unless climate change is addressed.

Then add a filler paragraph about how Trump pulled us out of the Paris agreement, and you have a news story about climate change affecting yet another place.

The state and the Feds should give zillions of dollars to them, to be spent at the discretion of the specific “leaders” who are most “concerned” about “climate change.” That will fix everything!

Somewhere I was reading about how the problem wasn’t the rising sea level, but land erosion where the land meets the sea. Then there’s the problem of erosion between Democrat’s ears.

So the latest Gorebull hysteria fear is that low lying areas in Cajun country will sink, creating a Gulluh Archipelago.

I’ll just show myself out.

The Gullah communities are not really necessary. All the Gullahs can migrate to Charleston or Atlanta

A friend who is genuinely concerned but a bit dumb mentioned the “measurable” rising sea levels on some Pacific Islands. Funny he had never thought that if is measurable in one place then it should be measurable everywhere. Some areas are sinking some are being eroded and no doubt some areas would be rising out of the water. Its all a bit dumb. I like to go crabbing outside of a town which is basically a foot above sea level. It has been that way since I was a kid. Still seems exactly the same

Well, it turns out that Gullah speakers are over-represented on the Supreme Court. Justice Clarence Thomas will be able to take Gullah issues into consideration like no other.

FYI: The Gullah people live in the coastal areas and off-shore Islands of South Carolina. Nothing to do with Cajun country.

Prominent people descended from Gullah ethnic group are Clarence Thomas, Michael Jordan, and Michelle Obama.
