Freeing the child slaves of Lake Volta [Ghana]

...The lake, which was only created in 1965 with the construction of a hydro-electric dam, is home to an estimated 20,000 child slaves.

Children as young as five are sold to human traffickers and made to work as fishermen for up to 12 hours a day, seven days a week. They are beaten. They are abused. They eat scraps off the table and sleep on the dirt.

Some of these children drown when forced to dive under the water to untangle fishing nets. These forgotten children become yet another anonymous corpse resting at the bottom of the lake.

When they die, no one is there to grieve for them and no one is punished for enslaving and endangering them. The only loss is a financial one.

The fisherman who bought the child had paid the price of a cow..

Humm I like to be compassionate for these kids but the first thing I notice is this is being reported by the FAKE news CNN.
The same network that sides with the Democratic political party that is sprinting toward socialism and or communism. It is the same party that supports abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia if they could get away with it. One wonders why they are reporting on this atrocity, maybe as a broken clock is right twice a day, they are compassionate twice a day and report the news as it is, but I suspect they might have an agenda for this reporting.

PAYING a slave owner his asking price for his slaves, even if your motive for buying them is to free them, simply gives the slave owner money to buy even more. His price likely gives him enough to buy more than one back on the local black market, so it actually creates more slaves than reduces it.

I do not trust CNN to tell the truth. I doubt there are 20,000 child slaves on lake Volta, though there are certainly some. Giving money to a CNN sanctioned group will only make the problem worse.

As one who has lived and worked in Ghana (and has Ghanian friends*) I’m with you there. Something’s - er - fishy. And as for the interview with the Bob Marley act-alike: Look up “Ghana High Life” on YouTube if you want to hear Ghanian music.

* Including my post-transplant nurse coordinator who is on a USA work/study program. (He is just about to finish his Ph.D. and return to Ghana as a university professor.)
