Democratic presidential candidate Julián Castro on Sunday hit Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) over his 2020 rival's position on reparations.
"What he said ... the other day was he didn’t think the best way to address this was for the United States to write a check." Castro said during an interview on CNN's "State of the Union."
"However, it’s interesting to me that when it comes to 'Medicare for all,' health care, you know, the response there has been, ‘We need to write a big check.’ That when it comes to tuition-free or debt-free college, the answer has been that we need to write a big check," the former Housing and Urban Development secretary added.

Castro's remarks come after Sanders's comments earlier this month during an interview on ABC's "The View."
“I think that right now, our job is to address the crises facing the American people and our communities, and I think there are better ways to do that than just writing out a check,” Sanders, who is also seeking the Democratic presidential nomination, said at the time.
Other Democratic presidential candidates, including Castro and Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Kamala Harris (D-N.Y.), have said they are open to reparations for black Americans who are descendants of slaves.
Castro reaffirmed Sunday that, if elected, he would appoint a task force to look into reparations.
"If under the Constitution we compensate people because we take their property, why wouldn’t you compensate people who actually were property?” he said.
What will be proposed is more programs for minorities.
I say minorities and not blacks, descendants of slaves, because once these new programs are proposed every other minority will jump on the 'historic victim' bandwagon.
Castro is obviously trying to get the other half of Mexico’s population to sneak into the USA for a free check. That’s how you get elected to Congress from San Antonio….and his mother is a flaming Communist Latina.

No, this is atrictlyva vote thing. These voters want cash, and not more programs.
Reparations is a bad idea, but . . .
If it is determined to be necessary, don't sugar coat it. Make both the purpose and the remedy clear.
One easy way: first, adopt a test to determine who is white and who is black. Mark them so there is no confusion.
Next add a reparations fee to electric bills (say $100 per month) to all identified white people and disperse the money to those entitled to reparations.
Plan to end the reparations fee when those receiving the benefit announce they have been compensated enough.
That struck me too. Everyone who was a slave, or who was a slave owner, are long dead.
Because they’re happy to be slaves if they get free stuff. I remember watching a “person on the street interview” when Hillary was trying to create Hillarycare so many years ago. The claim at the time was we would become just like Cuba if the government took over healthcare. One woman told the interviewer she would gladly live under Castro if it meant free healthcare. That kind of person is why the democrats exist as a party, and before long they will outnumber us.

And since blacks owned slaves, how are the reparations to be extracted?
What about all the US tribes that owned slaves who pays them?
And what about all those of Slavic descent whose ancestors were enslaved by the Romans, who pays them?

The peculiar institution of slavery predated the creation of the United States. I find it interesting that advocates of reparations never mention seeking redress from the Dutch, the English, the French, the Portugese or the Spanish in addition to the American government. All of these colonial powers had taken part in importing slaves to the New World. Likewise one never hears of calls for redress directed against African and Arab slave traders.
Also, if you did make a reparations payment, you would never be done. Suppose this generation with black ancestry is paid off. What happens to their unborn grandchildren? Do they get to argue that their parents or grandparents blew the money because of past cultural disadvantages, and now they need to be paid, too?
You would be setting up a permanent black aristocracy.
Come to think of it, we are at some level setting up a "non-white-male" aristocracy anyway with all of this diversity foolishness, and have been doing so for at least a generation.
This is virtue signaling to guilt-laden, anxiety-ridden liberals who believe they can easy their collective imaginary guilt by showing their support for 'victims of historic racism'.
There are lots of ignorant, gullible white votes out there.
Once the money is paid, that's it.
No more discussions of racism. No more demands for more programs and more money. No more blaming the white man.
If we're going to pay extortion money, once we give them the money the extortion ends.
They won't take the deal.
Because they used to literally support slavery, and fought against getting rid of it, and now they figuratively support slavery by trying to keep blacks on their political plantation.
As to the politics, if you can be assured of 90% of the vote from a group that makes up 12% of the electorate, your job is do whatever you can to increase turnout. Democrats do that by painting republicans as racists, especially if republicans are against giveaways to blacks.
Democrats do the same thing with the LGBT community, which is estimated to be around 4.5% of the US population.
