New Zealand PM: "There will be changes to our gun laws"
CNN ^ | March 17, 2019 | Steve George, Joshua Berlinger and Hilary Whiteman

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has confirmed that her country's gun laws will change in the wake of Friday's terror attack.

"I've already indicated there will be changes to our gun laws. This will be discussed in cabinet tomorrow," said Arden during a press conference in Wellington, Sunday.

Until Friday, the biggest massacre in New Zealand's history occurred 30 years ago, when a man named David Gray went on a shooting rampage, killing 13 people.

Following that attack, the nation's gun laws -- which were first passed in 1983 -- came under scrutiny. The ensuing debate led to a 1992 amendment on the regulation of military-style semi-automatic firearms.

Despite those laws, New Zealand's weapons legislation is considered more relaxed than most Western countries outside of the USA. Gun owners do need a license but they aren't required to register their guns -- unlike in neighboring Australia.

While authorities do not know exactly how many legally or illegally owned firearms are currently in circulation in New Zealand, estimates put the number at about 1.2 million, according to New Zealand Police. This figure equates to about one gun for every three people -- a rate that is considered high when compared with Australia, which has 3.15 million guns, approximately one for every eight people.

Addressing the current gun laws, Arden said that change was required "regardless of activity that may have happened with gun retailers, they need to change."

Arden said she would provide more detail as to those possible changes to firearms legislation following more detailed discussion with her cabinet Monday.

There problem is a math problem. The ratio should be three guns for every one people. IMO.

Dumb emotional liberal snowflake.

I still remember many years ago when New Zealand banned U.S. Navy warships from their ports because the U.S. Navy would neither confirm nor deny the presence of nuclear weapons on board.

Another country I’ll never visit.

New Zealand did the same thing in the 90’s when they had another mass killing.....it's what they do to convince their libs they're doing something.

I worked with a gal who moved here from New Zealand....she waa so happy to leave the ‘suffocating’ nation and so happy to enjoy feeling free here..and still does.

So, the terrorist wins.
Didn’t take the NZ PM and AG a full day to surrender.
Gave the guy exactly what he wanted.

Gun laws restrict the law-abiding, not mass murderers. They will always do what it takes to accomplish their evil ends.

And here is what this guy was trying to accomplish by murdering 49 people, from his own words:

"I chose firearms for the affect it would have on social discourse, the extra media coverage they would provide and the affect it could have on the politics of United states and thereby the political situation of the world. The US is torn into many factions by its second amendment, along state, social, cultural and, most importantly, racial lines. freedom and liberty.

With enough pressure the left wing within the United states will seek to abolish the second amendment, and the right wing within the US will see this as an attack on their very freedom and liberty.

This attempted abolishment of rights by the left will result in a dramatic polarization of the people in the United States and eventually a fracturing of the US along cultural and racial lines."

Swell NZ- make law abiding citizens EVEN MORE VULNERABLE to CRIMINALS who don’t obey gun laws anyways, by taking away law abiding citizen’s RIGHT to have firepower enough to defend themselves against people bent on evil-

Problem: Criminal uses gun ILLEGALLY to murder innocent unarmed civilians

NZ solution: Make sure law abiding citizens will never have proper means to defend themselves?

Liberals by and large are morons

I saw the shooters video last night. He had a GoPro camera on his head, helmet, whatever he was wearing. First off, nobody was armed for self defense in the video except for the shooter. One guy had the guts to try and tackle him but he wasn’t fast enough and he got shot to death which you can see which to me was the most heart breaking. But the entire video to me was just one whole shooting fish in a barrel type of deal, and you could tell he was paranoid about other people with guns because he kept looking around behind him, sideways. You realize pretty damn fast that one person with a gun would have stopped the mofo but of course we don’t want that do we. Self defense takes last place to leftists and their disgusting infringement upon the God given right of self defense. BTW, anyone wants to see the video just PM me and I’ll send you the link

Doughty - by citizenship I am (currently) Kenyan. We just went through two months of serious RE-vetting. All firearm holders had to go and get re-vetted (re because we were already vetted before), and it was an onerous process. We had to bring all firearms and all ammunition, line up and one-by-one get asked why we needed firearms. All our documentation had to be rechecked (and everything better be there), and then many people who had multiple firearms (eg typical would be a pistol for carry, a pistol for IDPA/ISPC competition would be tend to be larger, a Benelli type shotgun, and an AR variant) ...people with multiple firearms had to justify why they needed them, and all of them were told to surrender some.

Several friends did manage to show why they needed them - eg three gun competition, but even those ones eventually lost the ARs. All ARs were made illegal and repossessed.

After the vetting then we had to go for ballistics, where each (surviving) gun fires three bullets for computerized ballistic printing of breechface, barrel etc.

Then everything was put into a digitized record.

Why was this done? Ostensibly to make it ‘safer’ in the country. My opinion though is that it is a way for the government to show that it is doing something. It must be absolutely OVERWHELMING to try and deal with the hundreds of thousands (literally) of illegal firearms in Kenya. Our border with Somalia means that all sorts of nasty sh|t comes through, and criminals get access to that. The government obviously would find it difficult to disarm criminals - after all, criminals are not law abiding in the first place and will not heed edicts requiring them to turn in illegal weapons.

But the government can show traction with the 15,000 or so LEGAL firearm holders, who - being law abiding - will follow what the law states. By taking some of our firearms, they can show they are taking serious action. And since Kenya doesn’t have any constitutional rights toward firearm ownership, we don’t have much of a choice (as opposed to the US where, for now, you can hold up the 2nd Amendment).

So, I expect to see the same in New Zealand. Their government, like ours, will need to show it is doing something. Anything. Nd the ones to be targeted are the very same ones who would not go into a place of worship and murder people. Innocent law abiding citizens.

As for the US - trust me, it will start with registration. Common sense after all. Then there will be more common sense legislation. Then more. And more. And before you know it, common sense will result in confiscation. After all, common sense. Guard your rights against common sense.

New Zealand.

Isn't this the country that has just about eliminated their entire air force because it was too expensive?
