Dutch security forces are hunting for a 37-year-old Turkish man suspected of having shot several people on a tram in the city of Utrecht on Monday, in what authorities said appeared to be a terrorist attack.
The Mayor of Utrecht, Jan van Zanen, has since claimed that three people have been killed with nine more injured.
Authorities raised the terrorism threat to its highest level in Utrecht province, schools were told to shut their doors and paramilitary police increased security at airports and other vital infrastructure, and also at mosques.

My impression....watching bits and pieces of German coverage, is that he’s some kind of petty-criminal (arrested before)....probably on drug charges. They’ve been careful about his past behavior in describing it.
Per Dutch media, the perp was indeed known to the police for a variety of offenses, including attempted murder.
Per RTV Utrecht, the perp has a history of petty crime, also faced charges of attempted murder in 2013, and was recently in court for a rape which took place in 2017.

Exactly. After the NZ shooting, the City of Jersey City announced that police would be guarding the local mosques. This is one of the cities in NJ where inhabitants cheered the toppling of the WTC on 9/11/2001. It is also 8,900 miles from New Zealand. Funny, I can’t recall police being assigned to guard the local churches or synagogues in Jersey City after any of the many acts of Islamic violence against Christians and Jews.

Witness on the tram says in some way that a particular woman seemed to be targeted. Maybe he knew the woman or had past negative dealings with her.
City has told people to stay indoors and avoid all public areas. Guy apparently escaped in a car. Some suggestion that he may have crossed the German border (no proof).
2 possibilities....
1) Intended vic was the rape accuser, or someone standing in for her...
or
2) That’s what the authorities want the great unwashed to think, anything other than terror.

My impression (having been to the Netherlands five or six times over past decade)...you have some under-class (Turks, Africans, etc) that specialize now in the hard drug sales routine. No one in the political community wants to come down hard on this group, even if you have assaults, drug arrests, threats or rapes. If you did remove this group (maybe a couple thousand nationally), then who’d sell the hard drugs?
We can admit....part of the enticement of the Netherlands, is drug-tourism. I came across some Brit couple around 2007 who were about as stoned as you can get, and still walking along a canal. I kept thinking they’d both fall into the canal, but there was a barrier to help prevent them from falling in.
