PRATT: What Media Won’t Tell You About The New Zealand Massacre

10:00 AM 03/19/2019 | Opinion
Erich Pratt | Gun Owners of America

News of the New Zealand shooting brought the usual calls for gun control in the United States. And while the mainstream media is helping fuel the prejudice against gun rights, their greatest bias is in what they refuse to print.

True to form, here are at least three things the media will not tell you about New Zealand’s shooting.

First, New Zealand has far greater gun control than we have in the United States.

New Zealand requires gun owner registration, licensing, universal background checks and more.

Authorities will even investigate gun buyers by interviewing family members before issuing licenses. So-called “assault weapons” are legal, but heavily restricted.

Taken together, the country’s gun control far exceeds what we have in the United States. And yet their extreme restrictions did not stop a bad guy from using firearms to commit a heinous massacre last week.

The failure of gun control is not unique to New Zealand. Consider Venezuela, where gun confiscation of all private firearms was followed by a horrendous spike in crime, making the country one of the most dangerous places on the planet.

People there not only fear violent mobs, but their government, as well. And yet the U.S. media routinely fails to make the connection between gun control and the lack of safety — whether it be Venezuela, New Zealand or this country.

Second, the shooter broke off the attack only after being confronted with a weapon.

That’s right, a potential victim at the second mosque grabbed an unloaded shotgun and threw it at the shooter. This shattered his car window which presumably made him think that he was being fired upon. The killer sped off, and lives were undoubtedly saved. But few outlets have mentioned this.

Likewise, the mainstream media have steadfastly ignored the many legitimate examples of self-defense in this country where good guys use loaded guns to bring attacks to a halt.

For this reason, few people know that FBI reports on active shooters show several examples where armed civilians either stopped or prevented mass shootings in recent years.

These examples are just the tip of the iceberg. FBI “active shooter” reports show that when a gun owner is present, mass shootings are either prevented or mitigated 94 percent of the time.

But the mainstream media is silent when it comes to good guys with guns.

Then, there’s the next thing the media will never do — and that is to point the finger at themselves.

Criminal psychologists have begged the media to stop printing the pictures and names of mass murderers.

Why? Because subsequent investigations have shown that several shooters were specifically intending to commit their evil deeds, in part, using media coverage as way to become immortalized.

The list of shooters includes, but is not limited to, the criminals who attacked John Lennon, President Reagan and Rep. Gabby Giffords; those who assaulted the Columbine, Sandy Hook and Parkland schools; and many more.

These villains have used the media as their “useful idiots,” hoping that the media will lionize them, even in their deaths.

The same is true with last week’s massacre down under. The killer’s own manifesto reveals his fascist views. And that he wanted his crime — and the ensuing media coverage — to bring renewed calls for gun control in New Zealand and the United States.

The media clearly plays an unwitting role, at best. But finding a story where they will point to themselves as culpable is about as rare as a World Series title for the Chicago Cubs.

And yet it gets worse, as there are many examples where press coverage actually incites violence. For example:

So the press — whether accurately or inaccurately reporting the news — has fueled mayhem and death. How convenient that the media avoids any accountability by shifting the focus away from themselves and, instead, calls for Second Amendment restrictions.

Another fact the media won’t tell you is that researchers in the British Journal of Criminology studied Australia’s crime rates and concluded the “gun buy-back and restrictive legislative changes had no influence on firearm homicide in Australia.”

And news outlets in that country have reported that police departments around the nation routinely fail to report all the crime statistics which, of course, produces the appearance of lower crime rates.

One thing is for sure. Given that New Zealand already registers semi-automatic firearms, officials will now have a target list which they can turn into a gun confiscation list.

But just as gun confiscation failed to stop mass killings and mass shootings in Australia, it will most certainly not make the people any safer.

Just ask the people of Venezuela.

While the enemedia is fixated on the shoot-em-up in New Zealand, they ignore the DAILY slaughter of Christians by muzzies.

Nigeria: Muslims murder another 10 Christians, bringing death toll to 140 since February 10

Where's the phony media outrage over this??

I lived in Venezuela in the 70s. It was a lovely nation then and most prosperous. The Constitution then was modeled on the American Constitution. It had one fatal flaw. If not for this flaw the horrible mess of hunger and oppression and government sanctioned terror and murder would not have occurred.

The Venezuelan Constitution DID NOT HAVE THE SECOND AMENDMENT!

Make no mistake, when the left talks about “gun control” they really mean “gun confiscation.” When they remove all the guns from the sane people they can kill all their enemies safely.

More gun myths in US there has been no mass shooting where the perp bought his guns through the infamous “gun show loop hole” all the Dems scream about. Zip, zero, none. Do if this is such a bad practice why aren’t there shootings each week by deranged loop hole gun buyers?

“The failure of gun control is not unique ...”

It’s not a failure any more than people getting killed in automobile accidents represents a failure of our automobile transportation system.

Milo posted that the mosque which was targeted was done so because they had supported radical jihadists. Would like to see that mentioned by msm.

You know if Westboro Baptist were targeted their ideology would be mentioned in every story.

. And yet the U.S. media routinely fails to make the connection between gun control and the lack of safety — whether it be Venezuela, New Zealand or this country.

It is not a question that the news media fails to make the connection, as they are well aware of it. But their agenda goes hand in hand with the socialists agenda and this is total and absolute gun control and if at all possible removal of all firearms. Once this is accomplished and the public has absolute no longer any recourse, then the government, pardon the expletive, has you by your balls and can screw you to their hearts from sun up to sun down to their hearts content.

This is how a countries population reverts to serfdom and the government turns into a dictatorship. There are plenty of people out there with the likes of a Obama or Hillary as well as many others in lesser position who are just itching to tell you to jump and all you are allowed to ask is “How far and how high may I jump?” Don’t anyone say his can not happen, as it has happened over and over and time after time and millions of people have lost their life’s in the process.

The Venezuelan Constitution DID NOT HAVE THE SECOND AMENDMENT!

2A has turned out to be the amendment that is saving the Republic thus far. The Bill of Rights is pretty much shredded and the Constitution is constantly under attack and abused. I cannot imagine the horror in Venezuela right now and this should be a lesson for America where Socialism always leads.

re: “Second, the shooter broke off the attack only after being confronted with a weapon.”

What?

I watched the body-cam of the one shooter, he *left* the mosque without being confronted, and drove around for a few minutes ... so, what were you saying?

LOL ... the shooter wasn’t confronted by a weapon at the second mosque. He was confronted with a credit card machine that was thrown at him ...

Then the guy there used himself as a decoy to try and get the shooter to focus on him as he ran back and forth. The shooter was in the process of leaving after all that aggravation .. and the guy picked up an empty gun the shooter discarded, and he threw it through the window.

You make it sound like it was someone with a weapon that chased him off. In this case no one chased him off with a weapon ... that’s just the way it was.

BUT ... having said all that above ... I would tell people to get his manifesto and then to look at this analysis of it. You’ll come away with a lot better understanding of what he is doing ...

He’s referring to the second mosque. You saw the video of the first mosque.

But, no ... there was no one that chased him off with gun at the second mosque.

The video I saw was where the shooter got in his car (un-rushed; he was in NO hurry), put on his hat/helmet with the camera attached then referred to PewDiePie THEN drove to a mosque following voice directions from a mobile device ... he then puts on pre-recorded “music” while driving.

The shooter on video drives for several minutes and arrives at a mosque where he does his evil deed, and he doesn’t get chased off ...

When he leaves the mosque where he shot 50 some odd ppl, he dives around some .. did he pull up at another mosque? He does shoot at something several times THROUGH his windshield and the passenger window.

I am unfamiliar where a 2nd mosque fits in given ONLY what I saw on that one video. Unless, he DROVE to front of the 2nd mosque, met with some resistance, and DID NOT exit his vehicle.

One needs to give credit where credit is due. Yesterday evening there were some postings on FR giving the story of the fellow who picked up the empty weapon at the second mosque. Unless the murderer saw this fellow pick up this weapon, there would be no way for him to know that he would was being targeted with an unloaded weapon. Thus it appears that an empty weapon is better than no weapon. The murderer was put under duress that he hadn’t planned on and the probability is that he left the scene before he killed as many as planned.

The purpose of gun control is not to forestall criminals.

The purpose is to disarm the majority of non-criminals.
