Bernie Sanders' hiring of non-American campaign advisers may violate federal election laws

Bernie Sanders was hit a complaint this week, claiming his presidential campaign violated federal election laws by employing non-Americans in advisery positions.

A new complaint by the Coolidge Reagan Foundation filed with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) notes that three members of the Sanders campaign are foreign nationals, which appears to be a violation of federal election laws that prohibit foreign interference.

Maria Belén Sisa, Sanders’ deputy national press secretary who joined the campaign last month, was among the staffers named in the complaint, as first reported by the Washington Free Beacon. Sisa claims to be an illegal immigrant whose residency is protected under Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), an Obama-era program for assisting illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children.

Sisa recently caused an uproar after invoking an anti-Semitic “dual allegiance” trope of Jewish Americans while defending Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., and questioning whether American Jews, including Sanders, were loyal to the United States.

I thought I read last year that non-citizens and other people who are inelligible to vote can still offer their services (time, participation) to campaigns.

As of 2008, if not earlier, we’ve lived in an explicitly lawless country. No one gives a hoot about the pedigree of Bernie’s workers except petty conservatives.

Why do people forget this?:

n January 1993, Clinton’s nomination of corporate lawyer Zoë Baird for the position came under attack after it became known that she and her husband had broken federal law by employing two illegal immigrants from Peru as a nanny and chauffeur for their young child. They had also failed to pay Social Security taxes for the workers

Not "may", IT DOES!

Pursue this, prosecute it to the full extent of the law and "book em Danno!" Justice and "the rule of law" demands it.

Why people forget this I don’t know:

His own campaign aide accused him of dual-allegiance??? That’s what you get for pandering, Bernie.

I do not believe this applies to paid workers.

Suppose you’re out campaigning, and you take a cab. Do you ask the driver for proof he is a US citizen? No, you just pay the standard fare. An arms-length financial transaction does not bring in these laws.

Look at the troubles the Democrats are trying to make for Trump. A substantial number of the people staying at his hotels are foreigners. Is he receiving unlawful payments from foreigners? His defense is no, they’re just paying the market price, same as everyone else, so this is a routine commercial transaction.

I worked with a Brit on the Juan McCain GOTV in Tallahassee in 2008. Not sure PAID foreign nationals can participate, but see no legal issue with volunteers.

You're comparing apples to kumquats. When you hire someone that is here illegally, you as the employer are on the hook.

Lawlessness. America is becoming like Mexico, and will look like Venezuela if democrats have their way. Politicians always seem to want America to be something else, and much worse.

Your cab driver analogy is a weak one. The cab driver is not working on the campaign.
