was first elected to the Senate in November 1974, just three months after President Richard M. Nixon resigned. Congress and the nation were both shaped and scarred by the Watergate scandal, by the strain it placed on our democratic institutions, and the mistrust in government that ensued. Those years serve as a reminder that a democracy hidden from the people is no democracy at all.
The parallels between then and now are many. In both sagas, a politically motivated theft one a burglary, the other a hacking led to an investigation described by the president as a witch hunt. In both instances, the sitting president attacked the investigators and fired the lead investigator, leading to concerns that he may have obstructed justice. And in both episodes, the ensuing investigation led to dozens of indictments reaching the closest aides of the president.

Good grief...Go away already WaPo.
Yes, Mr. President take the wise advice of the WaPo. Surely somebody over there knows how sanctimoniously stupid WaPo sounds now giving “advice” to Donald Trump.
WTF? President Trump, you need to destroy these people. Please, unleash hell on these people.
All this commotion is meant to keep us distracted from the things that need to be done to save the country while the Progs undermine America. We should be asking the Republicans why they don’t support the president.
Well, look who the author is. Senator Leaky Leahy.
[[[ I was first elected to the Senate in November 1974, just three months after President Richard M. Nixon resigned.]]
Time for you to retire Leaky.
The freaking idiot has it bass ackwards.
The President has been absorbing all the calumny for the last two years. Now it’s time to reflect a little back.
This is going to be sooooo fun.
The RATS are really scared!
The media is working on a cover-up about how this whole waste of time and tax money waste started. How much money is wasted on investigations? How much money does the media receive in payback political advertisements from candidates from the left? They were successful taking Congress back because of candidates running on Impeachment Promises. The media continues to lie to its gullible audiences.
So are their media.
Since John Dean continually lied to Nixon to shorten his prison time, Nixon never even knew what was going on.
Nixon’s mistakes were trusting John Dean and the Republicans.
Bitchslsp this man, please...
Deep Throat went to prison because he violated the Weather Underground’s rights while investigating them.
Wash Poo deals in half truths.
Is that ex-Senator Leaky Leahy? Writing for the Post? Assumed he was dead.
Glenn Beck (yes, I know - I was coming home from a meeting and I was just curious what was going on over there, so I gave it a listen) was saying pretty much the same things.
Whatever, Glenn.
This is warfare now. They called it, I say DJT finishes it Kick the Ds to the curb like the quivering rat scoundrels deserve.
much to our disappointment, he’s still a senator...
Dear US Senator Leahy,
You said ...the strain it placed on our democratic institutions, and the mistrust in government that ensued. Those years serve as a reminder that a democracy hidden from the people is no democracy at all.
You swore an oath to our US Constitution. Our Constitution guarantees us a republican form of government. Quite specifically.
We have republican institutions, not democratic. We are a republic, not a democracy.
What is wrong with you, Sen. Leahy? Are you ignorant, or traitorous?
They need to go bury this clown. He’s been in the senate since 1975 and never done anything worth a damn.
And the Washington Post was the origin of more phony Russian stories than any other news source. The National Enquirer has a far better reputation for news at this time.
Because Democrats back then were being spoiled big time by Walter Cronkite and still want to be.
