The Hollywood elites are circling the wagons to keep Netflix out of the Oscar race, and customers chained to their old business model—as though masses of people still plan their night out by wondering who is nominated for what.
But Academy Award-winning Hollywood icon Kevin Costner won’t have to worry about Oscar consideration for his fine Netflix original, The Highwaymen, as it flies in the face of Hollywood liberal convention and restores the reputation of an American hero that Hollywood lore slandered as a vengeful, murdering buffoon way back in 1968.
Screenwriter John Fusco has been shopping his script to set the record straight about famed Texas Ranger Frank Hamer and his hunt for Bonnie and Clyde long enough that Paul Newman and Robert Redford were originally considered for the parts (Newman died in 2008).
But really, how could you possibly do better than Kevin Costner playing a legendary lawman who was a combination of Wyatt Earp and Elliot Ness? Couple that with Texas native Woody Harrelson’s laconic turn as Hamer’s best friend and partner, Maney Gault. It’s hard to think of anyone else in the roles.

This film was very well done.
Kostner and Harrelson do a great job.
I liked the film. It portrayed the Texas Rangers in a good light and downplayed the B&C roles so that they were only viewed as ruthless monsters and dead criminals.
It also showed some of the mental anguish that accompanied both of the lawmen as they struggled with being summary judges in assuring that they didn’t live one day longer than absolutely necessary, and the weight of actually killing a woman mobster for the first time in history.
J. Edgar Hoover described Frank Hamer as the greatest lawman of them all.
When he was young, he and Coke Stevenson (spelling?) caught a ring of cattle rustlers. Many years later he caught Lyndon Johnson stealing his first senate election from Coke. Harry Truman sent Abe Fortas to seal the deal and LBJ got away with it.
Hamer was in over a hundred gun fights in his life.
I wish I could walk into a gun store and pick up a Thompson and a Colt Monitor.
We watched it last week. Pretty good.
There was a murderous klan of highwaymen in Scottland once. Men women childeren. None of those women were ever killed by lawmen?
Hyperbolic claims are hype.

Watched it last weekend. Very well done. The last thing Kostner and Harrelson’s characters want to do is hunt down a couple of killers, but somebody had to do it.
I’ve watched ‘The Highwaymen’ twice now and worth every bit the watch.....everything about it is great!
John Boessenecker, author, Texas Ranger, The Epic Life of Frank Hamer, The Man Who Killed Bonnie and Clyde, at Amazon. The Highwaymen was not an accurate portrayal of events. I recommend the book for the back story on Hamer’s life and a recounting of the Barrow and Parker affair.
Hollyweird and the MSM always make hero’s out of murderous gangsters. I’d like to get the DVD of that movie.

They played up the fact that they were Texas Rangers which was interesting.
