The Intellectual Dishonesty of the Campaign Against the Electoral College

A full-blown war is raging against the Electoral College.

But as activist groups become more desperate to overturn our way of electing presidents before voters go the polls in November 2020, their arguments become more absurd and hyperbolic.

CNN recently ran a preposterous segment suggesting that James Madison called the Electoral College “evil,” a shameful distortion and an absurdity given that the man known as the Father of the Constitution had a direct hand in creating the institution.

Others have made more serious but ultimately absurd indictments of the Electoral College.

Among the biggest stretches made by critics of the Electoral College is that the institution was created simply to benefit slavery.

Left-wing pundits, politicians, and even a few scholars have made this a popular argument.

However, it isn’t true and is clearly a smear, a desperate ploy by sophists who want to tarnish the institution because they think it stands in the way of progressive electoral dominance.

Historian Allen Guelzo has utterly debunked the “pro-slavery” narrative against the Electoral College.

Guelzo, writing in National Affairs, says the only mention of slavery related to the Electoral College debate at the Constitutional Convention—the lynchpin of the argument that the institution was pro-slavery—is an obscure and unclear quote from Madison.

Madison’s words do not seem to suggest the Electoral College would help or hurt slave states in particular, however, but that it would balance the interests of different regions. Guelzo writes:

The only thing that liberals have against the electoral college is that it isn’t giving them the results they want.

So Democrats were for it before they were against it?

Oregon is one of the states joining this group. It will be quite ironic if Oregon goes to Trump this time:)

Leftists are perfectly cool with being intellectually dishonest, so long as it means they get to WIN.

"liberals have against the electoral college is that it isn’t giving them the results they want."

That's their motivation for everything they do, to hell with the Constitution. They know best.

Now if the "little people" would just give up on this silly "individual rights" nonsense, they could tell us all what to do and control every aspect of our lives 😒.

The Intellectual Dishonesty of the Campaign Against the Electoral College

It's an irrelevant waste of breath since disbanding it requires a constitutional amendment which requires 2/3 of both houses to propose and then 3/4 of the states to ratify. The sun will rise in the west before that happens.

They think they can circumvent it via the “National Popular Vote” scam.

Mathematical proof of the merits of the Electoral College:

(Not that math or science or proof matter at all to these would-be Stalins).

‘It will be quite ironic if Oregon goes to Trump this time:)’

if Trump were to win the popular vote (though the entire discussion is moot because the compact will not be in effect in ) there would be nothing ironic at all...your assumption is that Trump will not win the PV and that Oregon will have screwed itself by pledging to vote against Trump, even if he wins the state...

NOT just being “intellectually dishonest”.

LIBs are A-OK with LYING, NARCOTICS/DANGEROUS DRUGS, STEALING, SEXUAL PERVERSION, VOTE FRAUD & other CRIMES if the violations include “Progressives”/LIBs, as well as other people.

‘They think they can circumvent it via the “National Popular Vote” scam.;

if conservatives and Republicans had any notion that they could compete for the popular vote in a presidential election, they would have nothing against this compact...but since they haven’t won the PV since 2004, they figure that possibility remains a pipedream...which is the real problem here...

Wrong. My assumption is that Trump would win the popular vote and the Oregon Godless communist democrats pledged their electoral votes to the popular vote winner.

Not true. Conservative oppose the compact because it undermines the intent of the Constitution. 99% of voters in, say Ohio could vote for one candidate, yet the (clearly) overwhelming will of the voter would be thwarted should Ohio's votes go to the opposing candidate if the state joined the compact.

The Electoral College was designed to force presidential candidates win a coalition of states to win the presidency. This 'scheme' as well as the efforts to go to a national popular vote, will effectively eliminate campaigning in the Dakota's, Wyoming, Alaska and others. These states would effectively become vassal states to the population centers in California and the East Coast.

Among the biggest stretches made by critics of the Electoral College is that the institution was created simply to benefit slavery.

So put forth the claim that abolition of the institution was intended to prepare for the return of slavery.

Could be a hidden agenda here.
When 2016 Hillary saw she'd lose the electoral vote, they went into action:
they twisted the arms of electors to get them to change their vote to Hillary.
Some were threatened with violence along with their families.

We're talking Federal crimes. Not one single indictment or arrest......yet.

A change might negate these crimes.

You know, I think there is a chance Trump will win the PV...and it would give me great pleasure to hear and read about the agony and fear in Oregon leftists.

The winner take all situation is one I’d like to see states get rid of. Even in Oregon some electoral votes would go to Republican candidates...how sweet it would be. But, slightly off topic. Never mind....

This is the culmination of the 100 Years War by the American Communists (progressives) on the Constitution:

A16: Redistribution (legal theft).

A17: Democracy (mob rule).

If one can neuter States’ Rights on senatorial elections, then why not also on the Electoral College?

Everywhere I look, I see intended consequences via slippery slopes.
