President Donald Trump made a rare phone call to one of the few men who ever has been in his position: former President Jimmy Carter.
It was the first telephone conversation between the two members of the exclusive president's club and focused on US-China trade negotiations, the White House confirmed in a statement, which referred to the correspondence as a "very good telephone conversation." Carter wrote Trump "a beautiful letter" about the ongoing negotiations, the White House said, and the presidents also discussed "numerous other topics." "The President has always liked President Carter and first lady Rosalynn Carter, and extended his best wishes to them on behalf of the American people," the White House said.
Carter confirmed the phone call while delivering his regular Sunday school lesson at his home church in Plains, Georgia, on Sunday, according to WABE. Carter said it was the first time the two have spoken and said that Trump was particularly concerned with how China is "getting ahead of us."
The former president said he agreed. "And do you know why? I normalized diplomatic relations with China in 1979. Since 1979 do you know how many times China has been at war with anybody? None. And we have stayed at war," he said according to WABE. Trump and Carter have had enjoyed a warmer relationship than the current president and any other living president since taking office. Carter has shown Trump support on a number of issues, particularly on North Korean talks. In 2017, Carter told The New York Times that the media was "harder on Trump than any other president certainly that I've known about."

He has a point there....
“Since 1979 do you know how many times China has been at war with anybody? None. And we have stayed at war,” Carter said.....”
The peace-loving & “warlike America” - bashing Jimmy Carter’s selective memory. The 3rd Indochina War in 1979, between China and Vietnam.
He has a point there....
yes, but a bit naive.
They continue to occupy Tibet.
They continue to threaten India.
Still 40 years...why would they risk raping is with exports by going to war with anybody?
Let’s see what they’re like in a few years when a real President deals with the trade deficit.
What has it cost us in $$ to keep China out of wars?
Still, I never dreamed when I was 34 that we’d be in Afghanistan when I turned 50.
China is getting ahead of us, because a HUGE section of Anerican production sold out to China in the last 20 years.
Huge. Everything, which is sold in every single Walmart in America, is now made in China.
I know, not “literally” everything.
But close enough.
I think pdjt must certainly be able to find better advisors than the old bigot peanut farmer. Like, about 7 billion better advisors.
I think it is a stage act by PDJT. Carter was a bad president but personally decent guy (Or is seen as such) Hobnobbing Jimmy helps trump with the perception that he is a decent guy. AND it is a passive snub to The PIAPS, Nancy Piglouse and the current horde of democrats. Trump is saying, ever so subtly, “Jimmy was awful, but he’s better than you guys!”
I hope so. Following Advice from Carter is not why I voted for djt!
I thought it was because almost every company in America, spurred on by the thought of cheap workers and the demands of leftist unions here in the States, saw fit to suddenly make EVERYTHING in China.
I see that as more likely the cause of the imbalance than a series of wars on our part - but I’m hardly an expert.
Trump might as well discuss China with a brick wall. Hell probably get the same useful responses.
Yeah but the live ammo cost is a lot more if you are actually shooting.
Jimmah...just dry up and blow away!
How about their invasion of Viet Nam, post Nam War? They got their heads handed to them by the Vietamese.
How about their constant war with Nationalist China?
There is still a large segment of America that not only likes bi-partisanship, but actually thinks its possible to attain. Trump has no intention of listening to Jimmy, but it buys him some positive press for talking to him. It amazes me that after 2 years there are still people like you on FR that continue to think that Trump will sell us out.
Come on, getting Carters advice could be crucial.
Just listen to what he says and do the opposite.
Knowing what NOT to do can be very useful!
It bewilders me, but now I understand. The democrats made it easy for China to get into our markets.
Because, wouldn’t have been smarter for us to set up this same arrangement with South America?
It’s not too late.
Trump should make American companies doing business in SA or staying here, more lucrative than going to China...
He has a point there....
Trump is just capitalizing on the lurch to the left of democrat party. By respecting Carter he will take some old time democrats to republican column in 2020. What Carter says about china, Trump already knows.
Yes. Smart move by President Trump.
