On April 3, authorities in Trinidad and Tobago found 200 kilos of cocaine near the rudder trunk of the Teekay-operated LNG carrier Hispania Spirit.

According to the Trinidad and Tobago Guardian, the master of the Spirit spotted suspicious packages towards the stern of the vessel during a regular security check at about 0800 hours. He notified the authorities, and TT Coast Guard divers found seven bales of cocaine attached to the rudder or rudder trunk (accounts differ). The stash weighed about 200 kilos, an amount that would be worth an estimated $18 million (TT$120 million).

Before she departed, the Hispania Spirit's 28 crewmembers were interviewed by Trinidad and Tobago's Organised Crime and Intelligence Unit. It is not known if the narcotics were planted in Trinidad and Tobago or at a previous port of call, and the investigation continues.

It was the second time that cocaine has been found in the Hispania Spirit's rudder trunk...

“It was the second time that cocaine has been found in the Hispania Spirit’s rudder trunk...”

Confiscate the ship. Sell it to the highest bidder.

These guys are slow learners. But keep it up! Good to see millions vanish.

People on both ends of this shipment have to be really ticked off. Someone will pay for their stupidity.

Once, maybe. Twice, no.

The Cptn reported it so a best he wasnt aware or the owner.
Now the crew is a different story.

I knew Pan Am “Stews” in the 70/80 that were supplementing their income stashing “marching dust” and retrieving it on later trips

The story reminded me of a guy I met in Tampa / Tarpon years ago. He had been a USCG interdiction diver (I think) and I asked him about some of his wildest experiences. One of them, he said, was being under a ship near the screws when the skipper fired it up and put it into gear. Said his heart pretty much exploded in his chest and he just dove fast and hard. Frankly I don’t know why one would risk a multi-million dollar stash by keeping it “near the rudder.”

I remember something similar being reported years ago - a large, sealed steel cylinder full of cocaine had been welded to the hull of a ship, well below the water line. It was only discovered because a weld broke and the bracket began banging against the hull.

The Master discovered it....that’s Captain

I wonder where the ship had been before...

Puerto Cabello Venezuela maybe or maybe it was put on at Port of Spain

That’s a very large ship worth more than the dope

Not to mention the liquified natural gas it carries

Somebody lost around 350-400,000 cost not to mention eventual payday of 200 X 25,000= 5M

“Confiscate the ship. Sell it to the highest bidder.”...…….

Not sure of the age or condition on that ship but odds are, it’s a “Rust Bucket”. Confiscate it and cut it up for scrap metal.

I should have posted just the 8% to avoid confusion.

The remaining 24% were groups combined together each containing smaller percentages.
