URGENT ALERT: IF YOU DON'T WANT TO DOUBLE YOUR TRIP TIMES AROUND TOWN - AND LIKELY YOUR TAXES - READ THIS AND COME TO COUNCIL NEXT TUES
With zero public notice, the City of Phoenix has put a plan on agenda for next week called "Vision Zero". The major policy focus of this plan is a massive reduction in speed limits across ALL city streets.
Boston adopted this program a few years ago and reduced all City streets to 25MPH. When that didn't work - and by "work" they mean eliminating ALL roadway fatalities - they developed a plan to reduce the speed to 15MPH throughout their City core, and massively increase fines on drivers.
This is a horrifically bad idea for the City of Phoenix. Here's why:
1. First, and foremost, even the short walks to public transit in many East Coast cities are not something most people want to do in 100 degree heat - and a fair lot of people (the elderly, those with disabilities, people with medical conditions, etc.) cannot do here.
2. We lack the density, and are still decades away from achieving it, to make mass transit an effective option for most people on both a cost and infrastructure basis.
3. The infrastructure spending required (a huge number of elevated pedestrian walkways and barriers between the street and sidewalk) to keep even a single City street accessible to vehicle travel above 20MPH is money we don't have.
4. We already have massive, basic needs that we don't have the funding for - like paying off our unfunded pension liabilities, maintaining our current infrastructure, hiring more cops and firefighters, etc. So Vision Zero will come with a massive tax increase.
5. Slowing all traffic to a crawl will result in price increases for just about everything, as the time and resources needed to get products on the shelves and food on plates goes up and is passed along to you.
Proponents of this insane scheme are clear: it can only be passed by filling Council chambers with the victims and family members of accidents, and by lying about the intent of the program. They want to force everyone out of cars. They can't sell their REAL vision to the public, so their goal is to make driving as inefficient and difficult as possible and slowly force people out of their cars.
If you don't think their plan is a good idea, Council needs to hear you, they need to see you. Call your Council rep and let them know you think this is a terrible idea. Come to the meeting and stand up to the handful of "Urbanist" social engineers pushing this mess who think they have a right to dictate how your city operates to everyone. Let Council know they don't speak for you.

Roads with possible frontal impacts between cars, including rural roads[6] 70 km/h (43 mph)
Roads with no possibility of a side impact or frontal impact (only impact with the infrastructure) 100 km/h (62 mph)+
A more effective idea is to lower the speed limit to 35 MPH and coordinate the traffic lights. People don’t mind driving a bit slower if they don’t have to stop and wait at EVERY SINGLE LIGHT.
Need to increase the speed limit IMHO
Let's save money, and gasoline, and reduce wear and tear and maintenance costs on the roads !
Let's make the entire CA-OR-WA-NM-AZ speed limit 55 mph!

The City Council is not acting in good faith since their covert aim is to eliminate private transportation in the area.
That is, unless this is simply a money making scheme.
Removing illegal drivers will reduce traffic significantly. Revoke their drivers licenses, turn them over to ICE if found driving.
Vision Zero is nothing but an Green New Deal attempt to do away with driving altogether by making it so dang maddeningly slow and financially expensive, that people give up in frustration- It’s the ‘green new deal’ in disguise- count on it- After they lower it to 15, and increase fines for awhile while they collect all that ‘free money’ from drivers, they will claim it’s still not enough and lower it again, and increase fines again- The goal is to cause enough frustration and financial pain that folks stop driving-

Lower speed limits to a crawl, and install automated traffic speed cameras.

This is going to be a royal pain! Imagine how long it will take to get from point A to B???? I pray it does not pass but the city is run amok with demoncrats.
They could try shooting people who drive in downtown Phoenix but that was already tried in Chicago.

Vision Zero suggests the following "possible long term maximum travel speeds related to the infrastructure, given best practice in vehicle design and 100% restraint use".[5] These speeds are based on human and automobile limits. For example, the human tolerance for a pedestrian hit by a well-designed car is approximately 30 km/h. If a higher speed in urban areas is desired, the option is to separate pedestrian crossings from the traffic. If not, pedestrian crossings, or zones (or vehicles), must be designed to generate speeds of a maximum of 30 km/h. Similarly, the inherent safety of well-designed cars can be anticipated to be a maximum of 70 km/h in frontal impacts, and 50 km/h in side impacts. Speeds over 100 km/h can be tolerated if the infrastructure is designed to prevent frontal and side impacts.

Oh, heck, seems there’s at least one or two road rage shootings a day but in the Maryvale area. Would not surprise me if it increases.
It’s a lot of fun when they reduce Lanes also and then put barriers in your way so you can have broken tires and rims slow everybody down they’ll take a four-lane highway turn it into a two-lane highway road with barriers and circles
Outlaw all POVs including bicycles.
Everybody walks, uses public transit or gets out.
The place would become a paradise!
